A lot of energy is focused on protecting the rights of disadvantaged groups such as Kuwaitis, Latvians, and even humpbacked whales. All these are important causes, but occasionally it seems that they receive a disproportionate amount of energy while other causes go unserved. For instance, consider the sad plight of chickpeas. Most people take chickpeas for granted they sprinkle a few of the little critters on salads, grind them up to make hummus, or just eat 'em right out of the bag. However, few people realize that the chickpeas that make it into your mouth are the lucky ones many of their relatives have succumbed to a nasty fungus which terrifies many innocent chickpeas. While most of us turn a deaf ear to the fate of chickpeas, Sarah Covert works tirelessly to conquer this disease so that chickpeas can live in peace. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a Ph.D. in bacteriology, Sarah moved to Arizona where she is a National Science Foundation research fellow in plant pathology at the University of Arizona. She squeezed in a fair amount of desert hiking and bike riding between experiments.

Other 'B6s are on similar charitable missions: Lisa Gathard married some fellow from Princeton (just kidding, big guy no need to beat me up at reunion). Lisa is the chief financial officer for a technology start-up in N.Y.C. Mary Markland Gannon is improving the world by passing her genes on to a new generation. Dave Lenihan saves lives on the operating table in Boston, where he is a surgery intern. Susan Moser will be saving ill people when she graduates from medical school in Louisville.

After being barraged by requests for donations to Dartmouth, Jonathan Housum and Jennifer Culliton Paul decided that fundraising must be a pretty lucrative business. Unfortunately they devote much of their energy to raising money for our rivals. Jennifer works for Columbia, Jonathan for Harvard's Kennedy School. Jonathan eases his conscience by working in his spare time to raise money for the 'B6 Fifth Reunion fund (have you contributed yet?).
