Our last column left you hanging in suspense over the adventures of the David Noyes family. Were they plunging headlong into the abyss with real life imitating art (i.e. the television soaps as interpreted by son Tyler)? Or would they be living the good life somewhere in suburban New Jersey?
Yes you guessed it every morning Dave emerges predictably from his home in Warren, N.J., and commutes to a job on Wall Street. He loyally serves Barclays Bank PLC there as a senior vice president, responsible for roughly half the company's global credit exposure to North American customers. Weekends are consumed with a few games of tennis at the club and the usual home-maintenance projects.
Wife and mother Karyn juggles young Tyler's hectic schedule and manages his portfolio. And energetic Amber, now a big four years old, is the apple of daddy's eye. She's a determined youngster, best described as a force to be reckoned with in the near future. And so there you have it proof that a typical American family can thrive even in New Jersey. A story well worth the wait.
Not to be outdone, Larry Stephens keeps busy with his own brand of activities intended to culturally enrich us. Larry left Motown records in 1988 to join Sony Pictures Entertainment Music Group and was recently promoted to VP and assistant general counsel for legal affairs there. He keeps busy negotiating contracts with notable composers, creative writers, and celebrity artists (the names of whom are known mostly to your teenage offspring). He also played a major role in developing the business strategy for the recent Columbia Pictures soundtrack albums "Boyz N the Hood" and "Mo' Money." Larry learned to do all this stuff at Harvard Law School.
Gary Brooks is pleased to announce that he's moved to the top of the masthead at long last. The former firm of Teachout, Brooks & McNally in Norwich, Vt., has been reconstituted as Brooks, McNally, Whittingham, Platto, and Vitt. Gary did establish the predecessor to the firm in 1979, so it's only fair that he would finally and humbly move to the top of the heap. The gamut of practice services will be handled in this latest reorganization, though Gary sticks pretty much to real estate, trust and estate, tax, and corporate matters.
In his spare time Gary serves as secretary of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association, which means he must attend the group's annual winter meeting at one or another of the major western ski resorts. His spare time a couple of weeks hence, however, will consist of wining and dining your beloved class secretary. Since Gary almost singlehandedly conned me into taking on this job more than six years ago, the least he can do is buy me a decent meal every year or so. Little did I know that the tanned kid hiking up Mt. Moosilauke beside me during my Freshman Trip would come to cause such grief in my life. Here's to a classic Dartmouth friendship... I think!
