I suspect MCI will name a calling plan for me soon. It will only apply to calls made on the Sunday afternoon preceding the 15 th of the month while searching for news for the Class Notes. When we shoot the first commercial, think I will ask to have today's call to Dan Bierwagen reenacted. It really was a visit back in time, a chance to find out "whatever happened to ... ?" Dan has not been back to Hanover since graduation and has only spoken to one or two classmates since then, so my call came as somewhat of a
Dan returned to Syracuse, N.Y., after graduation, staying five years until the construction firm for which he was an estimator folded. So, in 1978, with a little push, Dan and wife Marilyn followed their dreams and moved to Mountain Home, Ark. There they began their own engraving business, working on everything from metal to plastic, architectural signing to name badges. They have really worked at building their small enterprise and are now at the point where they could be forced to choose between limiting growth and taking on employees, the responsibilities of which do not really appeal to Dan. The area in which they live has attracted many newcomers, including Dan's pop and Marilyn's mom and dad, who have all retired within a three-hour radius. Marilyn's folks are even close enough to help parttime with the engraving business. Unfortunately, June is the busiest engraving month for the Bierwagens, but, hopefully, I have jogged Dan's memories enough for him to hatch a plan that would allow them to make our 20th Reunion. I'm sure he could be positively influenced by J. Wright and Poco, both of whom he asked about.
On September 2, Todd Keiller—with incredible insight—wrote, "Get ready to faintan actual personal note sent to your home! I am sitting around recouping from some knee surgery and thought that it would be a perfect time to do some of the things I never seem to get to.
"We had a great picnic this summer with Tom Helfrich, who managed to squeeze in a stop in Massachusetts while over on vacation from Germany. He was on his way up to Plymouth, N.H., to see his new house, which he bought without physically seeing! Doesn't that sound like Tom? Actually, it was very well organized, with relatives videotaping potential properties. He will be renting it to these relatives for the time being. Tom needs something to help offset the plummeting dollar. As previously reported, he has just moved to Heidelberg where he starts a new practice that sounds like a great career move.
"Some of our classmates will be interested to know that the other purpose of the picnic was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our wives' graduation from Mary Hitchcock Nursing School. In attendance were: Diane (Galipeau) Keillerjane (Coyne) Helfrich, Sue (Hunt) Gallas, and our host, Bonnie (Nelson) Melcher. They have all done a remarkable job of juggling their careers, having 2.0 children each, cutting their hair, and staying thinner than their husbands!"
You'll never know what a lift it was for me to actually receive some news, Todd. Now I have only one more favor to ask. While you're nursing that knee, could you think of a way to make my longtime reunion dream come true? Bobby and the Corvairs, Bobby and the Corvairs, Bobby and the Corvairs ...
