As I write this column to appear two months from now in November, I am wondering who will be in the Presidential seat. Bush or Clinton? Or Perot? Certainly this campaign has awakened lots of lively interest in candidates' backgrounds. It makes me puzzle over what the responses to investigations or allegations will sound like when members of our class run for public office.
"Well, I only did upside-down margaritas twice."
"See, Senator, the Mid-Mass downhill was a ski race of ultimate importance on the Hanover Plain, a challenge for the true athlete." "Yes, parents, I am a strong advocate of year-round education. Why, the summer term I spent at Dartmouth College was instrumental to my intellectual development."
On the other hand, in this political climate, is it necessary to employ some of the language of these politicians as I bring you this news, most of it second-hand? Terms such as "allegedly finished law school," or "reportedly enjoys her job" come to mind.
My most recent contact with the West Coast came through Ellen Procter Wilson, who is definitely working as an assistant brand manager for Clorox and exploring the San Francisco area with husband Peter. Ellen (along with the rest of us) offers congratulations to former boss Peter Murane, who recently married Allison Wolf. Peter is also with Clorox. Best wishes also to Pam Haering, who recently became engaged to Dan Hagerman.
Lots of career changes and lateral movement going on—we must be entering another post-college stage. Lauren Schwartz, still in the San Francisco area, has left advertising to work for Red Sky films, andshe reportedly loves it. Lisa Sweeney, replete with an M.B.A. from Tuck School, spent the summer at cooking school in France and traveling through Europe. She joined Bain as a consultant in Boston this fall.
John Jakemic now works in insurance in Marin after a long stint with Prudential. DaveHerron successfully completed Berkeley's M.B.A. program and will deal with real estate in my beautiful home state of South Carolina.
On the continuing-education front, ChrisWainger graduated from Hastings Law School and took the California bar in July. Augie Dent entered his second year at Berkeley. Sharon Grayzel of Cambridge recently received her doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Tufts University—there must be many happy dogs and cats out there these days.
Let me know if you're in school, out of school, working, playing, traveling, marriedinquiring minds want to know. And if it seems like my address has changed, it has. The southeastern region of Connecticut boasts towns with names that remind me of Dartmouth; there's even an "Occum" and a "Hanover." Hope to hear from you soon!
