Many months ago when I was a carefree apartment dweller I wondered why the autumn leaves-plagued homeowner didn't stick to those ever green evergreens and thus eliminate fall raking. I now mow my grass under a portion of a Hanover white pine forest, and I have learned a fact of life that the folks didn't see fit to tell me: pine needles fall by the millions and one good October rain can turn a green lawn brown with their cover in a few hours.

There's a good side to the needle fall though. They give a fresh rusty color to the woods just as the wild flowers are about to droop under the weight of frosty nights. Soon the needles will turn brown but that stage will be short for some sort of snow topping can be expected from this point on until the spring greens begin working their way through the blanket of needles.

In these fascinating worlds of pine needle and wild flower, autumn, fall, and spring growth, I, for one, can understand more clearly the mystical hold nature had on early man. When I stop to think about the natural wonders on all sides, I berate myself for not taking more time to enjoy and appreciate, but it doesn't do much good. I'm a busy guy, as you are too, and the crowded work schedule seems more important than an afternoon on a color-splashed hill. Perhaps, next week....

But there's no perhaps about getting to the Class news for the month, the deadline is just around the corner - maybe I could use a deadline for getting out into the woods too!

Getting down close to the bottom on the hundreds of returns from last year's double postcard mailing - also getting worried that some of the info may be changed (especially number of children - man, are we reproducing - and they say the Chinese Reds have a special campaign), but we'll keep at the pile - they get another card out soon. But if you've news to send, don't wait.
