Bill and Hilly Niss fled the cold, snowy weather in Maine and visited Sanibel Island, Fla., in early March. At about the same time Phyll England deserted Florida for a Caribbean cruise and thoroughly enjoyed the change of scenery. In the meantime, Phyllis's son George visited England—in the U.K. that is—and liked it so much he wants to return some time accompanied by his mum. Sounds like a great idea!
Back up North, one of the regular features of Down East The Magazine of Maine, is the last-page article titled "I Remember." Each month it presents an item contributed by someone with fond memories of a particular time or event in Maine. The article in the March issue, authored by one John K. Moulton, is titled "The Blizzard of '33." Anxious to see a boat his father was having built during the winter, John and two companions set out from Portland during a college vacation headed for Sebasco Estates, south of Bath. His two friends were a Tom Allen and our own Pete Fitzherbert. Naturally they ran into heavy snow, which eventually turned into a blizzard. John was driving a model A Ford, and says: "Automobiles had no heaters then, at least ours didn't, and we had only one inefficient windshield wiper. The rear window soon became snow-covered and the car grew amazingly cold." (That brought back memories of some of my own trips between Hanover and New Jersey during our college years.) After sliding off the road for the third time, and having almost reached their destination, John, Pete, and Tom were finally taken in by a lobsterman and his wife. John ended up staying with them for a week and was able to check progress on the new boat. Pete and Tom, on the other hand, had to leave after two days, and the last word on Pete was that he "set out on foot along roads still unplowed." Pete has promised to fill us in on the rest of his part of the adventure—perhaps at Reunion!
We're looking forward to seeing Pete and the rest of you in Hanover during the Super 60th, June 10-12.
