'50 had another happy midwinter mini, replete with one of those beautiful, quiet snowfalls (which we remember so well) on a Saturday afternoon and evening. Present for the executive committee meeting and/or the dinners were Betsy Pinkham, Len andSue Matless, Karen and David Taylor,Meredith and Doug Smith, Bill Carpenter,Margie and Fizz Nichols, Marlene andEd Tuck, Dolores and Tom McCabe, Maryand Jacques Harlow, Willy and Al Mitchell,Ginny Haase and Bob Kirby, Ben Shaver,Sally and Newc Eldredge, Pinky and BobLindell, Joe Medlicott, Jack Kent, Jan andBud Gleason, Yours Truly, and my dear fiancee, Bobbie Cantrell.
Our next mini and meeting will be October 15-17. Dave Taylor is holding for us all of the rooms at his Sunset Motel. For reservations call 603/298-8721. We'll have a tent at the motel, a steak and lobster dinner, and Tom McCabe with his forties and fifties music. It will be Homecoming vs. Yale, with Saturday's dinner at the Woodstock Country Club. Put it on your calendar. Our next February mini will be on President's Day weekend, 12 14 Remember that our minis include a Great Issues-type lecture, now sponsored with several departments of the College. Only two years away is our 45 th Reunion (with 48 and '49). Bob Lindell and Fizz Nichols have agreed to be chairman and treasurer, respectively. Meanwhile, we are studying the feasibility of having some mini-reunions in other parts of the country. Bill Carpenter was trying to assemble '50s at the time of the Chicago kickoff of the Campaign for Excellence in March, which he organized. At the fall mini we will be inaugurating Ed Tuck as class president, electing a new assistant class agent (who will go through the chairs to become class agent, vice president, president), and presenting one or more class of '50 awards. Suggestions should be sent to Alex Hoffman, 231 Middlesex Road, Darien, CT 06820.
Thanks to your loyalty and Ben Shaver's good handling of our financial affairs, we voted not to raise class dues this year. They stay at $27.50, and widows who wish to receive the Alumni Mag are asked to pay only the $15 fee for that. Our endowment fund stands at about $25,000 toward our goal of $200,000 by the year 2000. We expect about 420 dues payers again this year, out of close to 550 living members. So the few who are withholding their dues are not hurting us very much.
Bill Carpenter says the Alumni Fund is running ahead of last year, but '50 is behind others: only ten leadership donors so far this year, out of a goal of 49. (We had 39 last year who gave $1000 or more, and now leadership gifts are $1769). The Alumni Fund now provides only eight percent of the expenses of the College of Arts and sciences. Our goal for this year is $165,000; the record for a previous class out 42 years is $158,000. Let's beat it!
Newsletter Editor Joe Medlicott also edits the letter for ILEAD (Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth). It presents eightweek courses in the spring and fall, and five week ones in the winter.
Jim Harms recently had surgery for a brain tumor and is now on chemotherapy. He and Terry still plan a cruise to the Caribbean this spring. Our prayers are with you, Jim.
