By the time this column is printed, Ginny and I will have left the sultry western shore of Florida for the warming sands of Virginia Beach. So please ease the mailperson's chores and address all those newsy notes to the address below.
It's been a Big Green winter and spring in Florida, lots of Dartmouth doin's. At a March meeting of the Sarasota Club, with ladies invited to hear the good word from Hanover per Trustee John Rosenwald, I learned that John and Marge Kelley had just returned from their ninth trip to Jamaica. This time it was with a golf group that included those avid swingers Hugh and Miggie Kenworthy.
Also seen at the luncheon were Tom andPatty Trump, back in Longboat Key, Sarasota, after a quick trip to Milwaukee to take over a condo in Mequon, Wise., for their summer occupancy. The Trumps were soon to celebrate their 50th year of wedded harmony. Ditto smiling Norm Locke and Janet, as well as Don and Betty Taber. A rousing Indian yell and a tip of the beanie are due for these and all other classmates who pass the 50-year mark of togetherness in 1992! You're a rare breed in today's society and deserve high praise from your peers and especially the younger generation.
The aforementioned Don Taber is rapidly becoming the reigning water conservation expert at his condo complex in Sarasota. He's a regular fountain of knowledge on the xeriscape system of saving water in homes and gardens.
Another attendee at the March meeting in Sarasota was Sally Frechette Maynard, our former Trustee. She and husband Doug, a nice guy even though a Princetonian, are dividing their calendar between Anna Maria Island in Florida and Keene, N.H. A hardy perennial at all of these meetings is the silver-haired, silver-throated Connecticut Yankee Phil Hall, known locally as Champagne Phil. GeorgeTamlyn, wintering on Longboat Key, has appeared at some gatherings. He still maintains a house in Chatham, N.J., from where he commuted to the New York City financial world for many years.
That hale and hearty pair Steve and LucyWinship spent 17 wonderful days in February blazing ski trails (and no sitz marks) in Switzerland and Austria. Steve, chairman of our bequests program, happily reports from Hopkinton, N.H., that two classmates have recently added a total of $1,045,900 to life income trusts held by '41s. This brings the grand total of such trusts established by '41s to $1,442,036. Such gifts pay income to the beneficiaries for life, offer certain tax advantages, and eventually provide funds for the purpose named by the donor. For more data, you can call toll-free (800) 451-4067, the Bequests & Trusts office in Hanover, or give Steve a jingle at (603) 224-0518.
Hank Maxwell reports from Claremont, Calif., that some arthritis has reduced his weekly golf output to nine holes while riding a cart. But his previous long service to the community was recognized last year when Hank was named Claremont's Honored Citizen of the Year. Hank has enjoyed correspondence with TomJardine,FrankMyers, ClayMessenger, and Don Egan during recent years. Now, if we could hear directly from those blokes??? Follow the example of Norm Jones in Burlington, lowa, whose long letter must be held until next time. Cheers!
