It has been a long time since I received a "letter of the month," but Bob Conway has finally ended the dry spell. Bob's letter was hysterical, suggesting an annual form letter that "classmates could fill out merely by checking boxes." Bob even included a suggested format with multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank news items that I just couldn't translate properly within the confines of this column. After laughing for three paragraphs, I got to the serious update:
"I am doing environmental and land-use law work for the five Marine Corps installations in North and South Carolina. Trying hard to 'keep the stars (the generals) from behind bars' when it comes to environmental compliance. Keeping up with a six-year-old son who plays soccer and baseball makes it easy to conform to Marine Corps physical fitness standards! I hope to bring both my wife, Lynda, and son Phillip to the 20th/21st reunion next June. See you then!"
You certainly will, Bob. Thanks for being so "semper fidelis." (Even if you did contribute to Bob Barr's summer newsletter first!)
Which reminds me coming June 16-19: the best reunion you'll ever attend. Plans are well under way, so start making travel plans. Also, please remember that reunions mean higher Alumni Fund goals. An early and generous contribution will make Paul Sehl's leadership task a bit easier. I'm sure Paul would rather be busy enjoying little Cody William, born May 25. (As it is, Paul and Marian are probably only just getting reacclimated to sleeping through the night!)
In July Dr. Howard Baum, M.D., was elected president of the Passaic County Medical Society. Howie is a gastroenterologist affiliated with General Hospital Center and with Passaic Beth Israel Hospital, where he is on the board of trustees as well as vice chairman of the Department of Medicine. Howard was founding chairman of the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Clifton-Passaic and has served as vice president of the Association of Jewish Federations of New Jersey. Howie and wife Carolyn live in Wayne, N.J., and have two sons, Eric and Ivan.
An article from the Valley News gave a wonderful update on the work that Paul Gross and wife Peggy Sadler, still in Lebanon, continue to do to help a dedicated Tanzanian student. Paul and Peggy have provided room, board, and moral support for a couple of years now, permitting the young man to finish the high school education he couldn't afford at home. Most recently, they have done a commendable job of teaming up with a larger group to establish an education fund that will support Haji through his years at Vermont Technical College.
Harry Grove, president emeritus, and BillHarney, treasurer, have been elected to the executive committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City. TyroneByrd, a Texaco financier, was recently spotted at the Dartmouth Club of Houston's Second Annual Send-Off Steak Cook-Out for 1997 s-to-be, Murry Bowden '71 hosting. What a mouthful! (Get it?)
