What with the changing of the guard inside the Beltway, it's hard to know whether information coming across my desk these days remains current. Nevertheless, I'm happy to report that John Wolf was appointed ambassador to Malaysia last summer by President Bush. Details are sketchy and attempts to reach John at th e Embassy in Kuala Lumpur have been unsuccessful. Although the crowd at the Inaugural may not have been entirely to John's liking, we hope the experience has been both professionally fulfilling and enjoyable.

The arrival of the Clinton-Gore team seems almost certain to bode well for the EPA, and that's probably good news as far as DaveUllrich is concerned. Dave has been with the agency during some turbulent times and changing political winds over the past 20 years. It's good to know that Dave is continuing to rise in the ranks. Last fall he was named deputy administrator of EPA Region 5 (an area encompassing most of the Great Lakes states), a position he had held in a interim capacity.

Dave's recent activities and accomplishments were described here in the column some months back. We'll just add that his new responsibilities will focus on internal operations, including planning, budgeting, and human resources. He hopes to emphasize results as a guiding principle in communicating with the public. In the course of his career Dave has received two EPA Gold Medals for exceptional service, the agency's highest honor. These awards are a source of great pride to his wife Polly and son Eric, and can be admired by all classmates visiting their home in Chicago.

After two decades of service in the United States Navy, Gary Miller seems happy to be a landlubber once again. Gary was recently named business manager by the Canton (Conn.) Board of Education. He went active with the navy immediately after graduation, and during the course of his career he held assignments involving operations, finance, public relations, staff development, facilities and equipment maintenance, information systems, and safety.

Along the way Gary also picked up an M.B.A. from Golden Gate University, and he's currently pursuing a second master's in computer science at the Hartford Graduate Center. Gary has a medal too, the Navy Commendation Medal for exceptional work, which he was awarded while he was budget officer of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. His wife, Deborah, and daughters Gina and Betsy will display it for you with pride when you next visit their home in Canton.

Finally, we have an announcement that GailAnderson has been elected to the board of directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Gail has been active with ACEP since 1979, holding a variety of posts at the state and committee level. He remains as associate medical director of Grady Memorial Hospital and assistant professor of surgery (emergency medicine) at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. ACEP is based in Washington, so his presence there will undoubtedly be critical in the months ahead as the debate on health-care reform moves to center stage. We expect that the Hillary Rodham Clinton/Bill Clinton team is pleased indeed by this turn of events. And maybe there will even be a medal for Gail in the offing.
