Chris Mc Donald is apparently spending his life as a role model for heroic characters in Tom Clancy novels. Chris was recently promoted to lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and given the first command of a new ocean-patrol vessel, the U.S.S. Squall. The Squall is heavily armed and designed for shallow-water coastline maneuvering. It carries four officers, 24 crewmen, and, if necessary, nine Navy SEALS. Chris was commissioned into the navy in 1983 and first worked on the U.S.S. Francis Hammond as a propulsion assistant and Combat Information Center officer. In 1987 he went to Washington, D.C., to workin theNavy Office of Legislative Affairs as a Senate liaison officer. He then obtained a 4.0 in a post-graduate program at Defense Intelligence College and worked the next two years at the Pentagon as the Mideast action officer in the office of the chief of naval operations. In 1991 he went back to sea as a combat-systems officer aboard the U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts. He is fluent in Russian and French, is an expert pistol marksman, and has twice received the Navy Commendation Medal, among others. Chris and his wife, Pamela, daughter Catlin, and son Robin reside in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif. Chris is threatening to throw away the

glory, however, by pursuing a law degree.

Laurie Ann Demmer, M.D., has joined the staff of Leominster Hospital. She is a board-certified pediatrician, practicing with the Fallon Medical Center in Leominster, Mass. Laurie Ann received her medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. She also was a pediatric fellow in medical genetics and holds a master's degree in biochemistry from the university. Laurie Ann served her residency and internship in pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital and was part of that hospital's transport team and a physician in the emergency room. Most recently, she was the house physician for St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Mo.

Sam Lauren has just .been promoted to partner with the Indianapolis law firm of Bose, McKinney, and Evans. Sudden Sam practices in the area of commercial litigation. He received his law degree in 1987 from Bob bynight University in Bloomington. He lives in the Indianapolis area with his wife, Kim, three-year-old daughter Jessica and 16 month old Sam IV.

Jim Morgan has just been promoted to senior vice president of operations for Designer Foods. Jim leaves his former position as vice president and general manager of Boston Popcorn. During his five-year tenure there, Boston Popcorn was named by Inc. Magazine as one of the 500 fastest-growing companies in the country. Prior to Boston Popcorn, Jim was a buyer for Mrs. B in Bradlees Department Stores and worked at Macy's in New York City.

David Schafer was just named vice president in the Boston regional office of Market Fax Inc. David's company is one of the nation's largest market-research firms, and other than that its press releases are noteworthy for their absolute dearth of material. David resides with his two daughters and his wife, Stephanie, in Plopkinton, Mass.

The artworks of Nick Lawrence were recently exhibited at the DNA Gallery in Province town, Mass. Nick, who is also the director of the DNA Gallery, exhibited his polymorphic canvases as well as his more familiar oil and wood constructions. Nick has been widely exhibited in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. He has received a Massachusetts Council artist foundation fellowship and has had residencies at the Virginia Center and the Blue Mountain Center For The Arts.

From the Locus Department: With a family theme of "six by '96," John Donahoe and his wife, Eileen, have announced the birth of their fourth child, Kevin James Donahoe, on July 23. KJ joins brothers Jack and Tom and sister Kathy. Eric Miller and wife Wendy have announced the birth of Grace Ann Miller on September IS. Similarly, Drs. Bill andTerriKinard of Boulder, Colo., have announced the August 17 birth of their son Bill, who joins older sister Maggie.
