Today being the deadline for this column, I have managed to leave at least a dozen voicemail messages for you guys. I know better than to wait for their return but will go on hoping that I hear from some of you before my monthly deadline. In the meantime, I did manage to reach a few of you with what proved to be a somewhat intimidating request for news of the last 20 years!
Harry Brightly totally dismayed me by confessing that his musical career ended with his last Glee Club performance. After graduation, Harry returned home to Virginia to attend law school at the University of Richmond. Harry still resides in Richmond and describes his role in Human Resources for the Ethyl Corporation as that of a "generalist."
Rick Shafer is a money manager for Lincoln National Investment Management, an insurance company based in Indianapolis. Rick's work is independent enough that he was able to convince them to let him operate out of Fort Wayne, where he and Mary and their two children, Sarah 14 and Peter 5, are much happier residing.
Paul Cooper has spent all 20 years as a dedicated teacher with the Chicago Board of Education. During the past ten he has been an English teacher at Calvin Park High School. Paul completed his master's in education through Cambridge College in Boston during the summer of 1992. Paul reports that William Burks completed the same program in '93 and is now a student job counselor at Kennedy-King College in Chicago.
Mike "Montana" Carter left Hinman Hall freshman year and returned to Little Rock, where he graduated from Philander Smith College. Mike is a Systems Analyst for Union Pacific and his wife, Inge, is an assistant professor in medical science at the University of Arkansas. The Carters have two children, Jeanette 12 and Robert 10. Mike was back in Hanover last year and commented on the impressive development in which "even the streets have been moved."
From Hanover Don Ritt returned to his home state of Minnesota to complete his M.B.A. at the University there. After 11 years in human resources with Miller Brewing in Milwaukee, Don indulged a "little mid-life crisis" and spent a few years in municipal finance back in Minnesota. Postcrisis, the Ritts returned to Milwaukee, Susan's hometown. Since 1990 Don has been heading up human resources and labor relations for GE's Appliance Division. Don and Susan have three children, Samantha 8, Bill 7, and Charlie 5.
Still campaigning for the return of Bobby and the Corvairs, I made a point of checking on the whereabouts of Tom Spiliotis. I found him alive and well in Bushnell, Fla., with fiancee Nancy and his three children, 19- year-old Jennie who will transfer to the University of Central Florida in Orlando next year, 15-year-old Keri, and 12-year-old Ernie. Tom still uses his law degree (University of Colorado 78) and his experience as a corporate lawyer and shopping center manager to run his own business. Tom operates a vending center located in the rest area along 1-75 under a federal program championed by the Division of Blind Services. Tom also serves as vice chairman of Florida's Vendor Commission, which puts him on the road occasionally, addressing grievances, etc.
Tom thought the return of Bobby and the Corvairs would be a great idea—even though neither of us could come up with a rational plan for pre-reunion practices. With or with- out a reunion comeback, however, Tom would be happy to hear from the band and old Woodward and HPF friends at (904) 793- 5661. Meanwhile, an old groupie will just have to keep dreaming!
