Doug Wheeler was honored by the Portuguese government last November in a ceremony at the Portuguese embassy in Washington, D.C. He was made a Grand Official of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, recognizing his contributions to the advancement of Portuguese culture in the U.S. Doug and Katie live in Durham, N.H., where he is a professor of modern history. He finds himself examining history to discover where it all started, he explains. "Perhaps it began when, at the ripe age of seven years, I set out to write a history of the world." Doug also edits the quarterly Portuguese Study Review and has recently written a book on Portugal.
Also I recently heard from Louis Lazar, whose letterhead reads, "Non-Conventional Real Estate Services." His business is located in mid-town New York. Louis promised more personal news after the new year, so please send forth.
We hear from Frank Reuling, a certified ophthalmologist, that he has recently expanded his surgical practice at the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital in Virginia. He will be performing cataract surgery using a new advanced technology involving smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less discomfort, and improved vision.
Our own Superior Court Judge Joe Nadeau keeps coming up with innovations to improve the efficiency of the courts. Currently in practice is his notion that jurors in his court should be allowed to (a) take notes, and (b) ask questions of the witnesses. Just a trial run, but if it works, Joe is quoted as saying that this "will spread to other courts."
Vic King writes from his offices in North Plainfield, N.J., that he is "practicing law, and reading with interest the number of our classmates who have made the move back to the Hanover Plain, like Sam Adams and others. I find myself spending more time in and around Hanover with our son Al '95, who was in Russia last fall with the first of two terms, first in St. Petersburg and later in Moscow, then the winter in Siberia on Lake Baikol. My daughter is studying for her M.A. in molecular biology in Cambridge, England. She has joined the crew and is rowing in the bow in an eight (my old seat something in the genes she says, and she should know!). Saw EdHobbie at a local community-college gala."
For those following the Shaw saga, we expected to winter in our island paradise of Useppa Island, Fla., only to have to make numerous trips to New York City and Sloan Kettering for treatments for my prostate cancer. We did not buy the house in Marblehead, but hope to rent a house there this summer and enjoy sailing the East Coast. Please send notes and news.
