I'm baaaaaack! And happy to be here once again as your class secretary. Thanks to Doug Wise, who recently filled in for the late Harry Shaw as class secretary, I am in possession of some news about a handful of you which has not yet been printed in this column. But it's running out fast. So take a minute or two to jot me a note at the address below, or give me a call at (301) 924-4469 (h) or (202) 208-7231 (o). Remember my slogan: "no piece of information about any of my classmates is too insignificant to print."
Missing the 35th was unexpected yet unavoidable. Again, Doug Wise is to be complimented on organizing a truly memorable event! I'm an old piano-bar junkie and would love to have heard once more the familiar sounds of the Sultans Alike Melvoin, Jack Lindsay, Harry Washburn, Sam Swansen, and Sam's brother Chris '61. True, I'm addicted to the nostalgia I associate with their waitings. But you have to admit they're good. Not to mention the freelancing (loose-lancing?) pianists Don Chickering and Bob Werbel! Or the incomparable wit of Dave Gavitt as master of ceremonies.
Now on to news of individual classmates, such as Doug Wheeler, Class Poet Laureate. Doug was recently chosen by UNH to hold North America's only professorship dedicated to the teaching and study of Portuguese history. This will enable him to devote more time to his specialty and to do research, lecture, and train graduate students in the field. Doug has been with UNH since 1965. He holds a Ph.D. from Boston University.
Goody Gilman is the newly elected presiding officer (or "Illustrious Potentate") of the 4,000-member Anah Temple of the Shrine. The shrine is known for its 22 hospitals for crippled children and burn victims throughout the country. According to Goody, many children who could be helped by Shrine hospitals either aren't aware of them, or their families are hesitant to seek admission to them, possibly thinking that if something is free, there must be a catch to it or the quality is lower. Goody has held clinics to explain the services offered by the Shrine medical centers.

On a sad note, we just learned that Marty Glickman died in his home in Brooklyn last November of Lou Gehrig's disease. We hope to provide more information in the obituary section in the near future.
