I don't know about you, but this has been a major year for me. The big 50 is coming soon. In my case it hits the year that our first son graduates from college and the second from high school. To top it off my school board gave me a sabbatical for a few months, and after 25 years on the treadmill I actually have time to reflect on what all of this means. I'm not sure if this has been a good thing (Penny is afraid I may have trouble getting back to "reality"). Ask me at our joint 50th-birthday mini-reunion. I'm really glad this was planned so we don't have to do the "50 thing" alone. I intend to report on what I hear that weekend, but would welcome news from those who aren't able to be there. Send me reports on where 50 finds you.

Forbes Magazine ran an interesting profile on Hugh Farrington's leadership as chief executive at Hannaford Brothers. Hugh is a 26-year veteran of the supermarket chain which is now one of the largest in the Northeast. Forbes chose the firm as one of its rising stars because of Hugh's aggressive use of new technology and his expansion plans. He has linked the stores by satellite and installed computerized labor scheduling and employee-education programs. The results seem to speak for themselves.
