Well, the mail has been nonexistent this month (does everyone, have broken hands or is it an outbreak of carpaltunnel syndrome?), so what follows is thanks to the article clippers in the employ of the College.
John Pierce, who was publisher of The Old Farmer's Almanac at Yankee Publishing, has been promoted to group publisher. His bailiwick now includes, in addition to the Almanac itself, several companion publications, calendars, specialty products, trade books, and an extensive licensing program for retail products. John has been with Yankee Publishing for 20 years.
And speaking of New England and farming, David Miskell. warranted inclusion in a recent Rutland Herald article regarding the future of farming in Vermont. Based in Charlotte, Vt., David specializes in raising organic greenhouse tomatoes for sale to regional food stores, produce markets, and restaurants. He utilizes a greenhouse production system devised in Holland which allows him to produce 20,000 pounds of tomatoes each year out of a 4,500-square-foot greenhouse. David is working with the Vermont Economic Development Authority to obtain financial assistance with a planned 15,000-square-foot greenhouse and will pursue markets as far away as Albany, N.Y., in order to sell the increased production. "Our success is built on picking ripe tomatoes and getting them to market immediately," says David, who makes most of the deliveries himself.
James Day was mentioned recently in the Quakertown Free Press in conjunction with a concert he played in Telford, Pa. After graduating from Dartmouth he earned a master's degree in performance from the State University of New York at Stonybrook. Over the years he has played as principal viola with orchestras in America and Europe, including the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestra of the Teatro San Carlo.
Ike Heard, whose appointment as chairman of the Planning Commission in Charlotte, N.C., was noted in this column last September, was the subject of a lengthy article in the Charlotte Leader. Ike is also executive director of the Northwest Corridor Community Development Corp., as well as chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. The article broadly hints that anyone sitting simultaneously on two, if not three, potential political springboards may have a future in politics, notwithstanding Ike's protestations to the contrary.
