On Monday, June 21 President Freedman presented our own John Graf with an Alumni Award in recognition of John's service to the College and his many community endeavors in his beloved state of New Hampshire. John continues his fight against cancer. Knowing the champ that he is, I'll put my money on him coming out the winner. Keep John and his wife, Ann, in your prayers.

Guess who was named the 1993 Newsletter Editor of the Year? Shouldn't take you too long to realize that it is our very own John Murphy. In the citation accompanying the award, it was noted, "if there's ever been a freer wheeling, more imaginative, sprightly, up-beat, honest, and witty letter, then the College is hardpressed to find one. You keep your classmates entertained and enlightened, and you give them all the room they need to vent their agonies and their ecstasies about their class and their college." That certainly describes to a T the work that John does on The Sound and Fury. Congratulations, John.

Just like he used to on the basketball court, H. Carl McCall is looming tall in the world of New York State politics. Resigning from as president of the New York City Board of Education, he has been elected by the New York State legislature for the job of state controller. I always used to think that Carl was pretty smart, but I'm not so sure now. Taking on the financial affairs of the State of New York is second only to trying to figure out how to get the federal deficit under control.

The list of retirees continues to grow. Paul Wysard has retired after 34 years at the Punahou School, most recently as vice president and treasurer. Paul might do well to give Carl a call. Also joining the list is Laurance Eccles. His 32 years with the Department of Defense came to an end on April 2 of this year. I hope my wife doesn't read this column. She is on me every other week with the question, "Well, dumb-dumb, when are you going to get smart and retire?"

It is not too soon to start planning for our fall mini-reunion. Circle the dates October 29-30. If my memory serves me correctly, Harvard will be making one of its infrequent trips to the Hanover Plain. Joe Jacquet is putting together another string of festive activities. See you there.

Late in the spring I received notice of the death of Bill Walsh. He was living in Bradenton, Fla., after a career in business in Rhode Island. An obituary will appear in a future issue.
