Word has just been received of the death of Fred McBrien back on February 18, 1995. More recent deaths include Dick Shaw, remembered fondly as the class Sachem, in Denver, on September 7; Dr. Kev Fay in Santa Barbara on October 5; and Dick Clark November 4 at Hilton Head, Ga. Obits will appear in this magazine either in this or a later issue.

We have an election piece from Essex, Conn., dispatched by Cornie Miller, which headlines a bio of First Selectman Peter B. Webster, the youngest son of Bill and BunnyWebster. We have no word on the outcome of the '96 election, but feel secure in the assumption that Peter was re-elected. Now here's a name that rarely finds its way in print in this column. Dr. Bill Fair weather, who has served as chief of surgery at the Akron (Ohio) Clinic, among other worthy accomplishments, is now retired and getting in some travelGreece, Turkey, and, more recently, the Serengeti. Finally, here is a brief explanation from Bob Kaiser: "The Class of 1939/ Residential Life Senior Scholar Program, which our class has sponsored since its inception in 1989, enables a senior in each residential hall to undertake a significant independent project (usually a thesis) on some aspect of his/her major field of study. The program provides $3 00 to $5 00 to each student to cover research materials, travel, photocopying, and other costs involved in the project."

Ev and Bob Kaiser have attended the reception each May at which each recipient presents a brief synopsis of his/her project. The Kaisers are constantly impressed with the caliber of these students, their enthusiasm, and the amount of serious work they put into their projects. Bob continues: "The class of 1939's annual contribution to this program started at $,1,000 was raised to $1,250 for the last couple of years, and the executive committee voted this past fall to go up to $2,500. Even this higher figure, however, is less than half the overall cost of the program—the balance coming from the budget of the Residential Life Office."
