APRIL 1952: The Dartmouth Outing Club appointed Joe Migely,John Mullen, Roy Coffin,John Heston, Ralph Winslow, and JohnScoville to the 1953 Winter Carnival Committee and Dick Perkins, John Scoville, VicMahler, Cliff Hayes, and Ed Rowland to the Council for Winter Activities. Ed Schadt, attired in kilts, played his bagpipe at Variety Nite. Green Key elected Tom Malcolm, president; Jon Moore, vice president; MiltKramer, secretary; and Bayard Johnson, treasurer. Phil Anderson and John Musa in letters to The Dartmouth, questioned the proposed change in the honor system.

The College, to trim the budget, cuts back on janitorial services and students must make their own beds. Lo-Yi Chan, a member of the New York City Mayor's Art Commission, was quoted in The New York Times in an article on art, "My most vivid memory of art was when I started fifth grade as a new immigrant in this country. Life Magazine was new to me, and a classmate brought in a copy for a report. I remember seeing beautiful photographs and wanting to be a photographer to take pictures like those. I do not remember the images nor the photographer, just the feeling of wonder and wanting to become part of it."

Received a welcome call from TommyThompson. Some years ago he gave up his private dental practice, and for the last six years has been practicing as a dentist with the San Diego sheriffs office. I neglected to ask if he treats the officers or the prisoners.

Last October Peter Robinson was elected to the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. He was also a 1994 Distinguished Faculty lecturer at the University of Massachusetts and received the Chancellor's Medal on that occasion, where he spoke about "2.8 Billion Years of Earth History in the Amherst Region: A Continuing Detective Story." Peter also gave the inaugural Goldschmidt lecture in the new Knut S. Heier Conference Center of the Norwegian Geological Survey in Tronheim, Sweden, speaking on "Tectono-Stratigraphy and Metamorphism in the Western Gneiss Region: What Do They Tell Us About the Collisional Process?" (Was the lecture given in English or Swedish?) Peter's colleague commented, "Imagine being the leading expert on the evolution of a mountain belt on both sides of the Atlantic." Does that mean Peter can move mountains?

Dick Lewis continues to get elected. At its fall meeting, Dick was elected to the University of New England board of trustees. This item was reported in The Biddeford (Me.) Courier.

These notes are written in the middle of a long eastern winter. Only skiers could enjoy it! However, when you read this column spring should be on its way. The wonders of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine.
