When not involved in College and class affairs, Joe Kabat is busy as an adult volunteer at the Daniel Webster Boy Scout Council of New Hampshire where, for the past five years, he served as vice president for programs. In recognition of his efforts he was given this past fall the council's first President's Award. The dinner during which the award was presented was the same evening as Dartmouth Night which explains why Joe missed the festivities that weekend in Hanover.
The secret is out, Ralph Manuel. My moles at the Brunswick (MD) Citizen, report that your real name is "Pickle." The article went on to note that "Pickle" is in his 14th year as C.E.O. of the Culver Academies in Indiana. Can't wait for our next Reunion to hear your explanation of why that tag was stuck on you. I can easily think up a few myself as, I suspect, can your fellow '58s.
Make room for another retiree, '58s. Trygve Myhren retired as president and chief operating officer of the Providence Journal Bulletin this past February. Since joining the Journal in 1990, he has been responsible for the consolidation of the paper through the sale of its cable television operations and the introduction of zoned editions of the paper. Trygve, how about heading up a class panel on retirement at our 40th Reunion in June of 1998?
Talk about taking on a "hot" job in a cold part of the world and you are talking about Steve Dawkins. Steve is serving as political adviser to the commander of the NATO forces in Bosnia. As a part of his responsibilities he recently called on RegBatholomew in Rome to coordinate NATO support from Italy.
One of the sadder parts of this job is receiving the notices of classmates who have died. Yet, their contributions to the life of the College and those who follow in their footsteps can continue. MylesSlosberg reminds us regularly to include a bequest to the College in our wills. One who heard Myles' message was TomTowse. A year ago, the College received a bequest of $50,000 from his estate. Student-life programs administered through the dean's office will be the richer due to Tom's bequest. The next time you revise your will make provision for a bequest to the College if you have not done so already. I was pleasantly surprised at the many ways in which it is possible to support various facets of the life of the College.
Please note my new e-mail address below. It's a fast and easy way to communicate class news to me.
