Lowell Haas sent me a very interesting newspaper ad for a concert that took place at the Kennedy Center on March 12. Hugh Wolfs son, also named Hugh, conducted the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in a performance of Beethoven's second symphony; my memory isn't cooperating to help me recall whether Hugh Sr. showed this kind of talent as an undergraduate.
George Colton sent me the following note: "Having gotten you into the secretary's job, I owe you some news from time to time. You're off to a good start I'd say. Ruth and I left Hanover, after living there for 50 years, back on December 14 and came to a new retirement community in Peterborough, N.H., just two weeks after it opened. Clearly we were among the pioneers in this place, but it has come up to speed very rapidly. Paul Cummings has been a resident of Peterborough almost all his life, his family having published the local paper, which he edited for many years. We went to their beautiful home for lunch soon after we arrived, and then had them here for a meal, because come spring or summer they expect to move here also to Rivermead, that is....Looks like a great place to spend the final years."
Dero Saunders (I should call him "Old Faithful") passed along a few reply cards, which you may have read in the Tearbag. Ed Mitchell wrote a note lamenting the fact that he got lost and arrived late at my annual cocktail party. John "Scotty"McPherson writes, "Somewhat ambulatory—hip and knee coming along. We sail from Puerto Rico to Istanbul in April-Royal Princess Love (mildly affectionate) Boat. Five great-grandchildren to date.
Bill Busy's card: "A personal note: Feeling nostalgic about the College on the hill, as the years go on. Regret that so many of us are fated to look down from Nirvana. Pity. Dividing time in Maryland and Maine, busy with volunteer work with Red Cross, cancer society, and local hospital."
