FREEZE! Okay, keep your hands firmly on die magazine, feet apart. Good. Now let me read you your Alumni Magazine Rights. You have the Right to Write. If you do Write, remember anything you Write can and will be printed in a magazine column. If you choose not to Write, a friend or colleague may be appointed to Write about you. What they Write may or may not be true, but will be accepted as fact by alumni across the country. Do you understand these Rights as I have read them to you? If you do, then WRITE!! Right? Enough said. On to the news...
Charla check-up: Excerpt from an e-mail by Charla Mac-Millan who is working for the Medicaid agency in Massachusetts (supervising service contract procurement). Charla writes, "I married my partner of two years in October. Her name is Melanie, also a graduate of B.U. Law a year after me. In the old spare time, I'm currently teaching a martial fitness class at a local health club, recently getting back into fencing, working on better recording of my music (I just got notating software for both keyboard and guitar!), and surfing the 'Net."
Mike Clarkin writes: "I've been living in Hong Kong now for about a year. I left Germany, but stayed with Hewlett-Packard. I'm doing a little marketing for Asia, and a lot of travel (most unique place visited so far was Chong Qing China—a city of 10 million people that I'd never heard of). I'm here with my girlfriend, Sylvaine (we met in Switzerland—her English is much better than my French, so we speak a horrible sort of Franglais at home). "We'd love to hear from travelers—we've got some extra space for friends. Haven't seen any Dartmouth people for a long time. Almost crossed paths with Keith Goggin in Europe, but I left before he could find his way down to Germany or I over to Lyon. Yours, Mike Clarkin '85, former swimmer, formerly SAE, formerly of Colorado, formerly of Richardson (is it still there?)."
Spotted in West Africa: Sophie Folly, cultural affairs officer in the U.S. Information Service, was spotted by former Dartmouth government professor Richard Joseph. She apparently organized a talk on democratization and conflict in Africa in Abidjan, the capital of Cote d'Ivoire. Sophie, if you see Carmen Sandiego amid your world travels, say "Hi."
Green as a Primary Color: BarabaraWhipple has joined the White House advance team, which means she plans events for the Bill, Hil, Al, and Tipper. She was recommended after planning the Dartmouth Commencement visit by President Clinton last year. Barb is officially director of public programs and campaign events. Congrats, Barb.
Semper Fidelity: Troy Miksen was recently appointed vice president and branch manager for Fidelity Investments' Boston Investor Centers. According to the press release, Fidelity has had Troy hopping since he joined in 1991, in places like Burlington, Vt.; Worcester, Mass.; Naples, Fla.; and Back Bay in Boston.
Point Taken: Lee Clein sent a scenic postcard from Bangor, Maine (his home), to point out that for classmates who are unable to attend Reunion, the various column Reunion reminders have been just so much "commercial clutter." Think of it like political ads, Lee—they're annoying, and then they're gone for four years. In fact, you won't be seeing any more Reunion ads in the column until after the millennium. Briefly Noted: Aaron Hill promoted to senior vice president at Dillon Read & Cos. David Hall and wife Meridith announce the birth of Katherine Kendall, November 3, 1995.
Thank you and goodnight: This is my last column. Thanks for the Memories. Keep in Touch. Don't be a Stranger. B-B-B-dee, B-B-B-dee, Th-That's All Folks!
