By the time you read this month's column I should be firmly entrenched on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis.Mynewjobrequires that I be more centrally located within Maryland so that I can easily access all counties within two or three hours. Quite a big difference from the starry-skied hot desert land of Kingman, Ariz. I still haven't been to an O's game, although I continue to eat crab cakes on a regular basis.

I got some West Coast news on MarkHaley, who is president of the Brown & Haley candy company in the Seattle, Wash., area. FYI, B & H sells such delights as the Almond Roca, the Mountain Bar, and those tin-boxed mints, Altoids. Mark's grandfather, J.C. Haley, founded the company in 1914 and convinced the War Department that his candy bars should be part of essential rations during World War II in order to get sugar, which was closely rationed at the time. More recently the company has expanded its focus on products such as coffee, cookies, wine, and gourmet beer (choices no doubt influenced by several winters in Hanover, eh, Mark?).

Tom and Judy Csatari are a mere two years away from graduating their daughter Emily '99. Emily recounts the scene of Tom and Judy's first encounter in the basement of Theta Delt: "My dad was playing 'pong' and helping out a freshman with whom he was playing, which impressed my mom," says Emily, our first '74 baby, and the College's first female "double legacy." She also has the legacy as the officer of Delta Pi Omega sorority who spent the most time at Theta Delt before reaching the age of 2.

The Los Angeles Business Journal reported that advertising guru Bruce Miller has been busy with Honda's Acura account and moving the Suisa Miller Ad agency into new digs in West L.A. I can take editorial privilege and say "LA" instead of the politically correct "Los Angeles" because I don't live there, Bruce. Bruce moved into his own deal from Foote and Cone & Belding in 1992 and has been kicking major butt since then. Bruce reports having bags under his eyes, though.

I received a nice call from Marty"Clambo" Melberth during the summer. Marty now resides in Oldenberg, Ind., which is still close to his forever home of Dayton. He seems to enjoy country living a bit more, so much so that he packed his bags and flew up to Alaska for a few weeks to cook in Dick Ellsworth's restaraunt in Fairbanks. Watch out.. .The Clam reported that he will be back in the fall to continue his never-ending search for the perfect space to house a museum for Dayton's minor league baseball team.

Following up on last month's column, Wayne "Dude" Whitmore and I had a chance to chat with Jawjin' Ken "Jook"Bernstein one summer Saturday night when I was out visiting Wayne, Alice, and Samantha at their beach house in Amagansett, Long Island. It was good to hear Kenny's voice again, but even better to hear his great infectious laugh, which I had completely forgotten about. Too bad I hadn't spoken to him since the 10th. But it did go to show how much you can miss by staying incommunicado. Comprendes?
