The freshmen this year had a great snow sculpture on the Green, prepared for Winter Carnival. A knight on horseback slaying a dragon was constructed, and whatever happened Thursday night found the horse and rider in pieces on the ground Friday morning. Faulty construction, warmer weather, wrong ice/snow combination? It was too sad an end after all that hard work. Only a few dorms and fraternities made attempts at sculpting. However, there was plenty of snow for all the races, and a beautiful sunny weekend for a successful Carnival.
We hear Mollie Strickland (Carter) is enjoying her condominium in Charlotte, N.C. She has added a screened porch for use in warm weather, which to us would seem a major part of the year there. Certainly in New Hampshire and Maine it would see limited use. Two of her nine grandsons are married. Any granddaughters? I have eight, and two grandsons.
We have lost several more members. Jack Boyle in DeKalb, Ill. He was a room- mate of Jack Cook and Rip at the SAE house their senior year. JanetWoodbridge (Paul) of Quechee, Vt. She was a class officer, and kept in touch with class widows. Janet had a stroke and died in February at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. George Lane, formerly of Connecticut, died in New York in January. I am a longtime friend of George and Emily (who survives him), and have fond memories of times spent together both in Hanover and at the Freedom Hill Farm of Fran and Ted Shackford (both deceased). We send condolences to these families.
Please don't believe it—Rip is not slowing down much: "I wake each morning with a high intent To lift the world by some fine sounding means, Then rise and find my fervor too soon spent On my addiction to the old routines. Grant me acceptance, Lord, I do beseech To know and do small things within my reach."
