On the 163rd year of Dartmouth a Commencement was held on Tuesday, June 21, 1932. On this day of the solstice not only did the sun stop advancing, but the many new graduates saw their shining hopes for the future retreat as the great depression was deepening. The Commencement addresses given by classmates seem to reflect the mood. Robert Coltman: "A Modern Proposal for the Resumption of Hostilities." John McLane Clark: "Forgotten Men." Albert Levi Jr.: "The Failure of the Liberal College." Howard Hill Sargent: "The Changing Mind in College Education." But The Dartmouth of June 18,1932, told us that things were not easy for Eleazar and his four candidates for degrees at the first Commencement in August 1771. The four had left Yale to finish in the new college in the wilderness. A stage had to be built of rough-hewn boards, accessible by a single plank. Included in the program and represented by the four were three orations (two in Latin) and a syllogistic disputation!
Nate Pearson has continued paying into Social Security since its onset in 1937 and wonders if anyone can equal this record. Nate, as long as you keep working no one will beat it. His pacemaker works fine, but "the legs ain't what they used to be." Paul and Laura Dunn send greetings to all far and near, and they really mean it because their rhyming Christmas card is all about Nairobe, the Masai, the Seychelles, the Great Wall, and Hong Kong. Donand Ellie Marcus spent Christmas at Don, Lisa, and Teddy's home in Pasadena (we presume this is family). Preceding this there was a gala celebration of their 55th wedding anniversary at a country club in North Falmouth, Mass. Don reminds us that Dorothy Burch, Ben's widow, is living at the Royal Megansett Nursing Home, County Road, North Falmouth, MA 02556. Many remember her from reunions, and she would appreciate cards, etc., or visits from anyone in the area. We recently learned that Hazel Hammond, widow of Warner Hammond, died last year. She was an active environmentalist in central New York.
See you in Hanover June 6, 7, 8.
