Your officers extended on behalf of all '62s our heartfelt condolences to the family of Paul Tsongas, his wife, Nicola, and their daughters, Ashley, Katina, and Molly. The class of '62 feels our special loss but recognizes how influential and inspirational on a national basis was Paul's life as evidenced by a plethora of special articles and letters to editors that appeared and continue to appear in publications throughout the country. The good works resulting from Paul's public service and political idealism, from his brilliant and intellectually honest ideas and from his tireless energy and dedicated efforts to help his fellow man in so many causes, will remain a lasting monument to Paul Tsongas.

The December Eastern Edition of Adweek has a marvelous article on JohnMcSherry, who, as senior partner of BJK&E Media Group, acts in the capacity of an industry watchdog against such evils as promotion and sweepstakes-inflated ratings at sweeps time. John's efforts as an investigative reporter of statistical truths and anomalies as well as his honesty and healthy skepticism has earned him the reputation of a sort of a statistical "Wyatt Earp."

John has an uncanny ability to dissect local Nielsen numbers during sweeps time to distinguish how much of those ratings arise from promotions and contests that stations run to artificially boost numbers and how much is real viewership. He has been able to develop a reach and frequency model for buying cable networks as part of a national media mix. As John's freshman roommate I know of his love of music and the dedicated hours he spent in practice and performing the piano, which he once played as a teenager at Carnegie Hall. But John's career switch from music professor to market statistician is quite logical as he points out the close affinity between music and numbers. We wish John further suc- cess in his advertising career as well as in his other passion in life, the cultivating of a magnificent garden at his weekend Long Island home.

Congratulations to Mahlon Apgar IV on his appointment by the chancellor of the University of Oxford to the Chancellor's Court. At a ceremony conducted in Latin and held in Oxford's four-teenth-century Convocation House on October 2, 1996, Sandy joined a most distinguished group of court members who shall continue to advise senior officers of the university and presidents of the colleges.

By now you should have received from Kent Hutchinson the final mailing on our 35th Reunion with detailed schedule of events. It is not too late to join some 175 expected attendees for the June 9-11 festivities. Hope to see you there!

Write, fax, e-mail! We really want to hear from you!
