Oscar night tonight. A glamorous and intoxicating affair for those of us who live and work here in Hollywood. What was I wearing this evening, you ask? Cotton underwear by Banana Republic. That's it. Thankyou. Not nominated was Annette Gordon-Reed. But she is published. Annette, a professor of law at New York Law School, is the author of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy. The book, a main selection of the History Book Club, has been well-received by critics. Thaugust pages of The New Yorker called it "brilliant and understated." The book details Jefferson's sexual involvement with his slave. Hmmm. Sounds like a movie. Wait, that was a movie. Annette, would you have wanted Nick Nolte? I didn't think so.

Also not nominated and published is Debbie Wesselmann Lopresti. She has two books coming out this year: a novel, Trutor and the Balloonist (May), and a collection of short stories, The Earth and the Sky (October). She lives in Hopewell, N.J., just outside of Princeton, with her husband Dan '82 and their eight-year-old daughter Courtney. Look for Debbie's readings in the New York/Jersey/Philly area. And a major motion picture next summer starring Billy Bob Thorton as the balloonist.

Not nominated yet not forgotten is Hayes Wanamaker. Hayes was listed this year in the Best Doctors in America under otology and neurotology. That's cranial nerve surgery and sinus and nasal surgery for you laymen. Syracuse is where Hayes does his nose picking. Wow. The man is a surgeon, obviously a gifted surgeon, and I've reduced all that training and excellence and accomplishment to nose picking. Sorry, Hayes.

Finally, we have David Frasinelli, who has joined the Gilbane Building Co. as manager of business development in their Glastonbury, N.H office. I have no connection/segue for David to the Oscars. David did not win an Oscar tonight.

No one from the class of 1981 won anything. Maybe next year...
