The fabulous class of 1940 shines because of the outstanding achievements of its members. Elmer "Brownie" Browne received the Dartmouth Alumni Award for Service to Dartmouth and Distinction in Career at the class officers dinner in Hanover. At the 1940 table were Joyce Browne, Crosbie MacMillan, Tina and John Moore, Stet Whitcher, Bill Halsey, Tweedy and Ted Miller, and Donna and Jack Faunce. Joyce and Brownie were home early from Florida and saw snow for the first time in 10 years. Carla and John Manley pledged $100,000 to fund a training center in the Alumni Gym for intercollegiate athletes. At the Colby-Sawyer College graduation Bill Mercer received the Susan Colgate Cleveland Distinguished Service Medal. Bill had been a trustee for 15 years and chaired the college's first capital campaign raising over $27 million. On June 6,1997, Hal Sommer received a degree in engineering from Thayer School. As a Senior Fellow he majored in economics but also sat in on one year of engineering at Thayer. Thus he was able to qualify as an engineer without a degree. In addition to his many business commitments, Hal has been a trustee of Wells College for many years. Just elected a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Bob Bunker keeps in touch with his Tuck '4l classmates—there are 49. This year Betty and Bob visited with Lee and Bob Lake in Vero Beach, Fla. Also saw Kate and Howie Tallmadge in Greensboro, N.C. The Bunker family includes a Dartmouth son, a Tuck daughter, and a Tuck son-in-law. Bob states "Dartmouth has been good to our family."

Walt Bernstein wrote that writing Inside Out brought back happy memories of Dartmouth. "Memories dim for all of us, but I'll never forget my first sight of Hanover, getting off the old B&M train into the beauty of the place—especially after coming from Brooklyn."

Local radio station WJMJ Bloomfield, Conn., features the organ each Monday evening. Recently I heard the Rollins Chapel organ played by Sherryl Smith- Babbit. The Rollins organ was made by the Austin Organ Co. and presented to the College by Basil F. Austin in memory of his father Basil G. Austin. This CD is recommended as great music from Hanover. Halloween and Other Organ Favorites is produced by Harrison Digital Productions, Granby, MA 01033, number HDF-291.
