More about sports and the (class of 1940. CREW: Moose Stearns, captain. In the spring of 1937 rowing was purely a club organization and not recognized as a sport by die College. To raise money the club sold ice cream bars at basketball games and hot dogs at football games. Most of us went out for crew because we got our phys-ed requirements and a tan in the process. What most of us didn't realize was that we were really continuing the pioneering of crew at Dartmouth—the 1936 crew was the first racing unit for over 60 years. Anew shell in 1938, beat AIC of Springfield, Mass., on Green Key weekend and lost by a length to Manhattan on the Harlem River in NYC. Our coach was an Englishman, Jim Smith, a man of many pithy British expressions. His recommendation for training was to drink a bowl of ale each evening to help gain weight. In 1939 rowing machines were installed in the gym. Class of '40s in the varsity shell were Bob Dibble, Moose Stearns, Bill Wotherspoon, and Bob Welborn. Sam Williams stroked the J-V crew. Perhaps we helped lay the foundation for the many successes that recent crews have had throughout the world.
BASKETBALL: Bob Castle, manager. Some of Bob McLeod's strength may have come from his having me arrange for him to be served two T-bone steaks for dinner on our trips.
FOOTBALL: Jack Cowan, manager. The smallest man on Coach Blaik's staff was trainer Roland "Beaver" Bevans. He loved to run the players up Balch Hill Road the morning after a game. He would chew them out if he caught them at Mac's overindulging in chocolate shakes and grilled cheese sandwiches. Ma Smalley, however, could handle him with an iron hand. Bob Dibble won the trophy for being the most outstanding J-V. One has to admire that whole group who so admirably served as canon fodder for the varsity for three years. During his career, Bill Hutchinson started as fullback against Navy, was switched to halfback, and scored the first touchdown against Lafayette the following week. He scored against Harvard and ran wild against Yale. Hutch could also get off a booming punt when required. Jack found serving on the Dartmouth College Athletic Council a great experience. The other members from 1940 were Scotty Rogers and Jim Cooke.
SOCCER: Bill Wellington, captain. Regardless of the outcome, all games were fun. The entire team was very proud in my senior year when we beat Army, 3-2, after losing to Navy, 6-1, and Princeton, 1-0.
What have you done this past winter? Would be wonderful to hear from you.
