In case you hadn't noticed (or (missed it), you haven't read this DAM column for two months. That's because the magazine is published only nine months a year; there are no July, August nor February issues. So, what skimpy news I do have is two months older that usual. Nevertheless, here goes...
Bobbie and Jim Birney ran into Margie and Bob Thomson at the Philadelphia Flower Show last spring and the latter looked "fresh as a couple of daisies," according to Jim. (Yes, he actually said that.)
Shortly after Jim's letter, I got a long note from Bob himself outlining a "unique Dartmouth 1996."
He and his son did Bob's 15th Newport- to-Bermuda sailing race, qualifying him for the Cruising Club of America's 15-plus veterans group, along with Dick Nye '52. Later, Phil Lippincott '57 and Bob Finner '63 joined Bob and Marjorie in a "facial rejuvenation project" for their hometown of Riverton, N.J. Bob ends with "Hello Dickjoslin '53, wherever you are."
Jim Strickler, retired dean of the Medical School, is active as chairman of the executive committee of the International Rescue Committee, which provides more than $80 million of resettlement assistance, emergency relief, and rehabilitation to victims of violence and oppression.
Other alums on the board of directors are Robin Travers '77, Jon Wiesner '73, and Lu Martin '5l A.
Shirley and Dick Ceely are home in Ann Arbor after wintering in the Bahamas on their sailboat.
We're reminded by Emil Hudak that June was the 30th anniversary of the death of greatly respected and beloved baseball and hockey coach Eddie Jeremiah. I remember Jerry as the line coach of our freshman football team and the buyer of large quantities of Fuller brushes the summer I sold them in Hanover.
While rocking on the porch of the Hanover Inn one evening, Ray Head reports, two coeds strolled by and a friend remarked, "Ya know, it takes you back.. .even if you've never been there."
Jack Brodie now lives in "quirky Albuquerque after enduring 25 years in cold winters in Minneapolis working in new product development at 3M," He's been giving seminars in decision-making and problem-solving. Jack gets together occasionally with John Talley who is a psychiatrist and lives in Santa Fe.
An announcement from the Southern Vermont Art Center tells of an exhibition which includes the works of the late Bob Jordan.
The art center, I believe, is a result of the hard work and dedication of Alex Hofliman who lives in East Dorset.
Enjoy the rest of the summer. Think about joining the gang at the next minireunion on October 31-Nov. 2.
