Just fiveyears ago, Visiting prospective, students noted bow smoke-free Dartmouth appeared. But today, lit cigarettes have become as popular an accessory for Danmouth students as jelly bracelets were in the 1980s. In the wake of the states' fight against tobacco companies, we askedformer surgeon general and Dr. C. Everett Koop '37 why he thinks cigarette smoking has become more popular at Dartmouth over the past several years.

"I'm not sure I can tell you why more Dartmouth students are smoking than they used to. I think it's part of attitudinal trends. Itsn't just at Dartmouth, it's all over and it's affecting genders as well as minorities. I'm hoping that with the so-called to bacco "settlement" that we will see a new glitzy tobacco industry-life campaign against smoking and maybe young people will sit up and take notice just as they have of joe Camel and the Marlboro man.''
