A decade ago Judy Parish '9l was a force to be reckoned with on the ice. Today the new women's hockey coach has to be a force off the ice. To maintain a top program Parish has no choice but to recruit aggressively. "You won't see us starting beginners any more, people with only two or three years' experience," Parish says. "Now everyone playing has been doing this since they were five, and it's their primary sport." A key asset Parish uses to land the best prospects is her personality. "She relates to us well as players-she's very easy to talk to and to learn from," says center Lauren Trottier '01. "We have a great time with her both on and off the ice. In some ways she's just like another player, yet still very much a respected coach at the same time." Says retiring coach George Crowe, who coached Parish as an undergraduate and later hired her as an assistant, "She could have had a head coaching position many times over the past five years, but she stayed because she loved Dartmouth so much."
