This month features guest columnist Wendy Jastremski, who wanted to write about those "who don't normally make the news." Wendy wrote, "Since I am in a convenient location right off of 91, I am in a great spot to attract passing travelers. I was most recently visited by Nader Heleba and his girlfriend, Christine. Nader is finishing up his third year of medical school at UPenn and probably headed into orthopedics. He's doing great. Tom Albushies happened to be doing his surgery rotation in Hartford this month, so I had a visit from him as well. Like Nader, he is finished his third year of medical school, but Tom is attending Dartmouth Med. He's seriously dating another third-year, Danielle, and Tom's little sister just got married yesterday! Hence the visit from Nader, who was on his way from Philly to Hanover for the wedding. Steve Judge was also attending the wedding. Steve is starting medical school at Dartmouth in the fall.
"Cynthia Kelmenson is at UPenn medical school, finishing her second year and "tooling" for the boards with Brook Brouha '94. They are always skipping class to drive north to ski with Eric Vanni '94. I got to see the threesome a lot this winter, since 91 is the chosen pilgrimage path to Dartmouth and the ski resorts. Matthew Reese and I recently spent a weekend in Vermont with Kieran McNulty (a fellow Dartmouth Aire) and his wife, Katie (highschool sweetheart). Kieran is working toward his Ph.D. in anthropology at NYU. Matt and I are still dating, and he is still working for Pfizer Inc. in Groton, Conn. Although not directly responsible for the recent launch of Viagra, Matt is certainly enjoying Pfizer's recent stock increase. Matt's been continuing his Dartmouth Aires training in singing by performing in local musicals. Matt lives in Mystic, Conn., with Jeff Jorgensen '97, who also works at Pfizer, along with William Novomisle '96. The four of us are active with the Dartmouth Club of Southeastern Connecticut, which just won the Small Club of the Year Alumni Award. Steve Donovan from alumni relations came down along with Professor Braun to congratulate us and speak at our December holiday gathering. We had a great time at the party, as well as at Foxwoods Casino afterward!
"Next week I'll have a roommate reunion with Cristy Nguyen and Abby Neisius in Boston. Cristy is flying up for training for her job at the CDC (she lives in Atlanta now), and Abby and I are coming up to liven things up a bit. Abby is living in Stanford, Conn., and I am in Wallingford, Conn, (exit 14 off 91). I am teaching chemistry and coaching rock climbing at Choate Rosemary Hall, and I'll be here another year for those '95s looking for a place to crash on their way up to Dartmouth. They'll have to wait until school starts back up in September, however, since I'll be leading a high-school-aged group of Experiment in International Living participants (based in Brattleboro, Vt.) to New Zealand for five weeks. I can't wait! We're spending time in Auckland, living with the indigenous Maori, traveling the South Island, and living with host families on the North Island while doing community service at a nature preserve. It should be a great experience, especially since I never had the opportunity to take advantage of Dartmouth's study abroad programs. Kerry Gormley is also teaching at Choate, and she's spending her summer starting a master's at Oxford in England.
"Tomorrow night Janie Merkel is driving up from New Haven to help me pass the time "on duty" in the dormitory. I'm sure we'll be making our favorite chocolate sauce. Janie is still on the road toward her Ph.D. in molecular biology and biochemistry from Yale University. She's living with Elizabeth Kettlye. Liz is working on her midwifery degree at Yale. After returning from New Zealand August 7, I'm hoping Sonny Allison can make a visit for my brother's annual bash August 8. Sonny is interning at a prestigious law firm in NYC. Sonny is in his third year of the law program at the University of Michigan."
