Kudos to Todd Cranford and Valerie Hartman-Levy, who are responsible for uncovering most of the news of this column. Without their efforts this month's column risked omission, a most grievous offense for any column editor. I could not even find headline news around die globe worth mentioning, particularly now that the McG- wire/Sosa home run duel is safely enshrined in the annals of baseball history. Quite an exciting event, even for us casual baseball fans. So, with no further ado, let us begin with the news from our correspondents in the field. Todd is working with the enforcement division of the SEC in our nation's capital and loves D.C. In his own words, "things in D.C. are cool". He has but one lament worth noting: "I still do not have a serious woman in my life—any suggestions?" I suppose that inquiry can be perceived in several different ways, so I thought I'd offer the following food for thought: An English professor wrote the words, "woman without her

man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly. The men wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing." The women wrote: "Woman! Without her, man is nothing."

Todd, you're a great guy. Hang in there! You see, it's all a matter of perception! Just ask Denise Hansberry, who recently left the Baltimore law firm of Whitford, Taylor & Preston to join the enforcement division of the SEC (sound familiar?!?). Though I am sure Denise considered many things in her decision to leave private practice, I heard it said that she perceived helping Todd in his "serious woman" search to be as enticing as pursuing white-collar criminals (and goodness only knows how challenging those are to catch!). Good luck, Denise, both with the new job and Todd. Meanwhile, Ms. Hartman-Levy continues to cultivate her Southern ties to Atlanta

she has already convinced her older brother, who now resides with his family there, so it is only a matter of time before she starts wielding her charms on the rest of us. Val recently resigned as assistant general counsel for CNN and has several irons in the fire in contemplating her next career move while juggling home life with husband Jeff and their sons Charlie (2 1/2) and Eli (10 months). Stay tuned for details.

On the parent pending and expanding front, Clarence Grant and his wife are expecting their third child this winter; LucyHarvey Lo Re and hubby Alan are also preparing for the arrival of number three, having just moved into new digs in Chevy Chase, Md. And Eric Woods and his wife, Sherry, have added a son, Malachi, on Sept. 2, joining older sister Miranda (18 months). Eric is taking some extended childbirth leave from Fannie Mae (where he is a business developer) to help manage and enjoy things around the homefront.

And you've read it before, but you'll just have to read it again. Several gal pals reunited once more as Alison Cooper Phillips,Jenny Archibald Williams, Allison ShutzMoskow, Valerie Hartman-Levy, and yours truly gathered chez moi for a November weekend of laughter and reminiscing, surrounded by some late Connecticut fall foliage not to mention a bit of ongoing house renovation work. The work-inprogress did little to dampen our spirits as we recharged our batteries to head into the winter months. I'd highly recommend you all do the same!

Wishing you a happy and healthy 1999. All the best to all of you
