Last column I promised you a guest columnist and, as clues, I gave you a "B" and an "A." Well, now, she provides the "B" and "S." At the risk of being the Wally Pipp of class secretaries, I presemt to you, my fellow classmates, (drum roll, please) BABS—Kathy Jeavons:
"Greetings from beautiful downtown Cleveland—the town many call 'the Paris of Northeast Ohio.' As I sit here in my office looking out upon the snow and ice swirling around in the 25-degree weather outside, my thoughts have been drifting south of the border—to Cancun Mexico, actually, where I vacationed with nine fellow Dartmouth '85s last April. Our fourday odyssey proved to me once again how Dartmouth taught us all so many important life skills—skills that were put to the test and served us well, even on vacation. (Perhaps you're wondering what skills I'm referring to. You may also be wondering why you don't remember learning these skills and how maybe you should have taken a few more classes with numbers higher than ten. Sorry, that's your problem.)
"So here's what Susannah Gaylord Stoll Lauren Sonstrom Rosen, CindyBergman MacManus, Sue Finegan Vasu,Jill Morgan Keare, Beth Gillman Hobbs,Emily Smith Arons, JoAnn ShannonDavey, Amy Durno Harned, and I learned about ourselves: 1) We use sound judgment. We could have entered a number of 'Spring Break' wet T-shirt contests, but we figured that the chances of ten 35-year-odl women winning were probably not that good. 2) Our mathematical skills remain sharp. After dinner one evening we quickly calculated that ten women and two small Mexican Taxicab drivers COULD fit into two Toyota hatchbacks and still reach speeds of 80 mph weaving through the streets of Cancun. 3) We can concentrate on several tasks at once. We managed to play four drinking games at the same time and lead an entire group of diners through a Conga line at dinner. 4) We still have that spirit of adventure. We jumped at the chance to rent ourselves a catamaran, which came complete with a case of Corona and a guide named Vince, who took us sailing, Snorkeling and sightseeing for the day.
"We got to talking during our day-long S.S. Minnow-type adventure, and the following classmates came up during our conversation: Dianne Bonina Dick, Bill Budd, Dave Burt, Janet Coit, Tim Coughlin? Carole Crelin Frassinelli, Kent Croft, Dave Etz, Alexandra Frangos, Gayle Gilman, Mary Hertzog, Rick Kleeman, Jenny Kreager, Tom Klupchak, Mike Lehman, Tyler Lindblad Jackie Miller, Andy Morton, Chris Mulligan, Steve Moss, Brook Parker, Mark Schulein Mike Smith, Hubert Smith, Bill Tyree Tyler Woolson. John Wolf, and TrefWolcott.
Of course we thought it would be a good idea to record the information we shared for posterity (i.e., this column), so I took lots of notes. Unfortunately, however, they did not survive the trip. Just as I was crossing the last 't' a huge gust of wind came out of nowhere and rocked the boat, and my notes ended up in the Caribbean. I'm sure the weather disturbance had something to do with that darned El Nino. Anyway, if any of you want to learn more about our conversation, just call the Camino Real Hotel and ask for Vince. He sure seemed interested in learning more about that Dartmouth liberal arts education. "Needless to say, 'LSA-Cancun' was great. In fact, planning is already in the works for our next adventure in the spring of 2000, so I hope by then I'll be able to report on (or at least mention) a whole new group of our classmates. In the meantime, for any of you who may have the good forturne to pass through the Great Lakes region, feel free to give me a call or stop in to visit. Cleveland is really lovely this time of year, and I've got a great view of the lake (that would be Erie, for those of you who are geographically challenged). Happy Holidays!"
