As you read this column summer will be beginning its onslaught. I hope this news will help lighten your load just a little. Thanks to David Searby and Kim Schmid, who supplied most of this months news.
David, the assistant cultural affairs officer at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, writes that Jim Burack recently came to Mexico City as an invitee-of his public affairs section at the embassy and proceeded to create a "minor international incident." Jim, a reknowned police policy guru and recently named chief of police of Milliken, Colorado (City Motto: "The Hub of Northern Colorado"), was misquoted in the Financiero newspaper with the headline "U.S. Police: Opposed to Amnesty for Illegal Aliens," a policy which, according to Jim, is contrary to the wishes of most Mexicans. Jim now knows the dangers of relying on interpreters but did manage to spend some time with the Mexican consul general from Denver and is working on developing a better relationship between Milliken and Mexico. David also reports catching Bobby ("Fun Bobby") Lewert in a split-second but decisive role as an extra in the 2000 Tom Selleck film RunningMates.
From Kim: Erica Lundquist and her husband, Randy, purchased a beautiful 24-acre walnut orchard in northern California and are currently investing much sweat and hard work to plant and nurture a vineyard on the property. This winter they announced their adoption of Chelo, 8, and Jesse, 6. Gregg Gorman is now juggling a family of five, as Julianna was bom in August and joined two brothers, Joe, 6, and Nick, 4. Gregg currently is part of the strategic planning division of Marriott. Cynthia Matthews Brown is expecting her second baby in April—another boy, who will be a perfect companion for her first son, Alexander. Paul Adkins is the father of two beautiful girls, Lauren and Caroline, and recently changed homes but stayed in Boca Raton, Florida. And last but not least, Kim herself is enjoying motherhood as she chases after Skylar, 3, and Madison, 18 months. Kim switched to a part-time schedule as an accounting manager at Partners Healthcare one year ago and is finding it to be heavenly.
Jeff Weitzman sent news of the latest "Yahooligan," Zachary Samuel Weitzman, born October 28, 2001. Beth Parish is teaching marketing and advertising at Regis University near her home in Lafayette, Colorado. She also teaches kids cooking classes to 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds ("messy but fun") and hangs out with hubbie David and son Brent (5).
Our musical classmate Matt Dickerson reports that another Deep Freyed song, "Statue Man," from the brand new Deep Freyed CD Facesof Blue has been picked up by a nationally syndicated radio show, Blues Deluxe, for national airplay the week of March 3. Matt co-wrote the song, and the CD is available on Amazon.com.
Class president Margaret Marder sends her regards and wants you to know that we are working on a class project and would like your feedback. Also please pay your dues!
On a serious note: Two of my friends have recently received breast cancer diagnoses. One who is our age had to have a double mastectomy and the other is waiting for her treatment recommendation. Ladies, and the men who love them: Please, please be vigilant. Monthly selfexams, annual exams by your doctor and mammograms when appropriate or after age 40 are simple, cost-effective ways to stay alive and healthy (along with exercise, no smoking and a healthy diet). Sorry to preach (actually, I'm not), but it's important. Take care of yourself—we deserve it.
