I had a pleasant surprise this month. Actually received a call from a classmate, AndyMurtha. That brings the total up to five for all the years I've been your scribe. Andy wanted to know the dates for the 1999 mini-reunion. Great that we have interest so early. The dates are Oct. 21,22, and 23. The opponent is Cornell, and it's Dartmouth Night weekend. So make plans. Be there! Andy's still working a couple of days a week. Something to do with music and TV. A little too complicated for me to explain except that I know ASCAP is involved in it. Said he took in the Princeton football game. Despite the record, the Big Green was competitive, so do not despair. Checked on some classmates living here in my beloved New Jersey. George Swick still up in Saddle River. He'll be off to his place in Utah for some skiing after Christmas. He and wife Lois celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Paris. Also found time for a trip to South Africa. George said he's still playing golf up at the Tuxedo Park. He didn't venture his score to me but said he was up there with Dow Jones. Tried Bill Carlson over in Freehold. Bill long retired from his government service. I think he was a spy but never admits that. Didn't get a chance to talk to him because he was babysitting a gra ndchild. Did talk to wife Sis (a high school classmate of mine), and she said that both are enjoying retirement and doing that which a lot of us are doing—taking life easy. Staying in New Jersey, I had a very sad and trying experience when I called Dick Mason down in Brigantine. His wife, Gail, told me that Dick had passed away just last week after a long bout with cancer. Such news is always difficult to handle. I had known Dick very well in school. He had worked in the family food business in the Atlantic City area. He was an official with the Atlantic City Beauty Pageant for over 40 years and even found time to be a cruise director on an ocean liner. We extend our sympathy to his family. Swick, Carlson, and Mason, what in common? All three came to Dartmouth from the Peddie School here in New Jersey. Another bit of not-so-good news. I called Bob Doran. His son-in-law said he had been hospitalized for several weeks with pneumonia. I was able to speak to Bob at his rehab place. Expected to be home in a few days. If you'd care to drop Bob a line, the address is 28 Harvey Drive, Summit, NJ 07901. I'm sure Bob would appreciate that. Talked to Gene Bokor. He and Gail were getting ready to go to their winter vacation spot in Sarasota. When I spoke to "the Boke," he was rushing off to a Philharmonic Concert in the great city. How impressive is that? And Jackie and Bob Kimball were about to set out for their winter digs in Arizona. Bob says all '46ers are welcome. You can find the Kimballs at 5431 North Zia Del Arbolito, Tucson, AZ 85750.
I received a notice from the college advising the death of James W. McBride. He was at Dartmouth with the V-12, but the college was not sure if he was in our class or 1947. He resided in Brookfield, Conn. Our sympathy is extended to his family.
