Following a very brief exchange of e-mails with your class officers, I now find myself acting class secretary. A lesson in the perils of late-night drinking and e-mailing.

A brief introduction is in order. I am currently EVP, digital publishing for Reuters, supervising our Internet and online business around the world. So it's a little ironic that I'm here writing on dead trees. E-mail is the easiest way to reach me, but the telephone also works.

Although I'm allowed to make up things, my appeal to the class of '70 listserve worked wonders, so I have real material this month.

From the north, Jeff Hall writes, "While I missed last year's trek to Alaska, I've decided to do a small trek of my own this year with my wife, Carol, daughter Teydin 8, and son Parker 6 to the more touristy sections of Alaska. During the year's jobs I managed to visit every state in the U.S. with the exception of Alaska. Since I'm turning 50 this year, I thought it would be appropriate to visit my 50th state. I really look forward to seeing the vast beauty of Alaska and getting away from the hectic pace of running a small software startup in southern New Hampshire. If anyone is ever in the Nashua/Manchester area, we are just up the road."

Dave Sawyer says, "I retired last March after 25 years of federal employment as a U.S. probation officer and U.S. pretrial services officer. I enjoy my new career as chief domestic engineer and divide my time between my home in N.H. and my cabin in Maine. I am also pursuing several hobbies in earnest and doing a little bit of traveling."

Doug Simpson writes that his daughter Elizabeth, age 12, has a web site on Geocities that gets more hits per month than Doug's own site. (She should get more; hers is more fun.) You can find them both through . Doug s been writing and speaking from time to time about e-commerce, law, and the 'Net, and has been tasked to co-lead the creation of the Internet strategy for the Trumbull Services subsidiary of The Hartford Financial Services Group, to which he is senior legal counsel.

Pam and Reed Saunders still live in Deephaven, Minn., and Reed is president of Colwell Systems, a division of Patterson Dental. The Saunders' son Hunter is a sophomore at The Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Daughter Ramsay, who is a senior at The Blake School, recently accepted early admission to Trinity College. Pam observes that we haven't gotten older, just our kids have. Good point. They are neighbors of Marylyn and Dave Irwin, whose eldest son Davis is a junior at Johns Hopkins, majoring in electrical engineering.

Just before the holidays Dave and Marylyn joined Susan and John Kirkland to celebrate the Kirklands' return to the States after their recent stint in Europe.

Josh Fitzhugh is pushing out into new territory: "Somewhat to my chagrin I find myself preparing to teach my first college course as an adjunct at Norwich University. Let's just say I'll be learning something as well as the students. Son is a frosh at Brown and daughter a junior in high school. I'm trying to keep my head above water as a sole practitioner. In my spare time my wife and I are trying to finish a log cabin sugarhouse that we built from scratch. Visitors welcome anytime." How about December 31st, Josh? Everything else is booked. We'll all meet at your place. Spread the word.
