Dartmouth beat Yale at the Homecoming football game this year, 22-19. It was a gorgeous, warm, sunny autumn day. Wayne Schlobohm, junior punter for Dartmouth, played an exceptional game. One punt stopped on the one-yard line; another on the five. Tough to beat. At the post-game reception I ran into David Sheppe, who went to Toulouse on the FSA program at the same time I did. David has been in the United States for the past three years, after spending the previous 11 in London and Paris. He has a French wife, Sabine, and three children: Nathalie 13, Lauren 12, and Adrian 6. David currently works for Chase Securities Inc. in NYC in equity derivatives and lives in Riverside, Conn. He told me he ran into Matt Dwyer and that I should report to you all that he (David) "looks as good as ever."
Now for an amazing story. On a flight between Charlotte, N.C., and Newport News, Va., I met a gentleman by the name of Tim Collins, who knew Buzz Cmaylo. Tim started working for Buzz right out of college at Microsystems. Buzz was his role model. Tim recalled that Buzz encouraged him to recommend solutions to organizational problems he diagnosed, an invaluable lesson. Over the years Tim has wanted to contact Buzz to tell him what a good role model he was. Apparently, Buzz taught Tim well, as Tim is now sales V.P. of Gates/Arrow, a $2.5-billion company in the computer business. Tim sends the following message to Buzz: "Now I want to know how to make it to president."
Ralph Fletcher writes: "I'm still living in Birmingham, with my wife and four energetic sons (16, 14, 8, and 5). I recently had two new books published: Flying Solo (about a class of sixth graders whose teacher doesn't show up one day, so the kids run the class themselves) and CraftLessons: Teaching Writing K-8, co-authored by my wife, JoAnn Portalupi. As a Yankee in the South (and one of the very few Red Sox fans in Alabama) I still feel like a cultural misfit after 21/2 years living down here. I still dream of heading back to sweet New England."
Scott Mosenthal writes: "I'm a week and a half into my new role as high school principal, and, fortunately, we're still in the honeymoon phase (let's see where we are when the first report cards come out).
"Only news on my end—saw former roommates Tom Denison and AndyOldenburg (yes, he exists!) this past year on different occasions. Andy O. is up to his eyeballs with a demanding medical practice and five kids (not necessarily in that order) in Jacksonville, Fla. Likewise, TD is holding down the home front in Northbrook, 111., as a banker, father of three, president of the local school board, and occasional marathoner. It was terrific catching up with both of them and their families.
"I also see Chris Nice in Hanover while I'm on vacation. He's quite the athlete—he routinely wins cycling and cross-country ski races and placed second in his age group in the World Championships in cross country skiing this past winter." Stay in touch.
