1940

In September 1986 when Stetson Whitcher and Sherwood "Joe" Burnett caught sight of six freshmen of the class of 1990 walking happily along South Park Street in their new environment, it occurred to us that they were following in our footsteps, but just 50 years later. Recognizing the significance of this, we asked if they would be willing to be photographed with one of us. The resulting picture is shown here and was published in our 50th Year Reunion Book. The enthusiasm of these young ladies for Dartmouth led to above-average performance, as we found out at their Commencement (also, our 50th Reunion). The record as follows: six bachelor of arts degrees, one summa cum laude, one magna cum laude, one cum laude, two Phi Beta Kappas, and one Presidential Scholar. They were also recipients of the following awards and prizes: The Willy Gorrissen Prize in Asian Studies, The Lawrence Marz Jr. Honor Award, The Olmsted Engineering Science Prize, The Grace and James Parker 1920 Prize, G.E. Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship, and co-leader of the Dartmouth Glee Club.

In addition, one of this sextet with a classmate organized a program whereby usable food that would otherwise be discarded by the Dartmouth Dining Service would be sent to White River Junction, where it could be distributed to the needy in the Upper Valley.

Later the class of 1940 established, with a gift of $1,990, The Class of 1990 Fifty- Year Fund as a term endowment. This fund is invested with the income added to the funds principal. In 2040 at the 50th Reunion of the class of 1990, the fund will be counted as part of the class of 1990's Alumni Fund Fiftieth Reunion Gift.

Stet was and is the treasurer of the class of 1940 and probably was not thinking of the class of 1990 Fifty-Year Fund when this picture was taken. It would be fun if in 2000 this picture could be updated. The class of 1940 will have its 60th Reunion The class of 1990 will have its tenth.
