Chap Cranmer died February 18,2000. The following story was found in his file: January 14, 1955, at the Dartmouth Club in New York. On one side sat Elmer Browne, Stet Whitcher,Dave Leake, Hugh Schwarz and DizdeSieyes. On the other side stood the bartender. Brownie was ordering. "Ginger ale for Stet, beer for Dave, and for Hugh and Diz, a double old fashioned and a double martini. Make mine a glass of sherry." Brownie had noted a slight look of uncertainty, possibly even lack of confidence, on Hugh's and Diz's faces about die jobs they had taken on. He must have thought that a good strong drink would fix all that.
Gradually the atmosphere lifted. "Another round," said Brownie.
This wasn't going to be such a bad job. Wasn't Stet saying, "Everyone sends in their contribution with the first appeal, and it's always at least $10 bigger than last year."
"As for news," said Dave, "all you have to do is to send out the first questionnaire and from then on the letters just pour in. Every member of the class seems to write at least once. You can't even use all you get in one Indian Drum. Last year I had to ran an issue a week all summer just to catch up."
"Another round," said Brownie.
Dave continued, "And furthermore, Brownie gets so much news for his column that he kept sending me items. Of course, I never had much use for them but it was nice to have them just in case." What a feeling! Diz thought, as the IndianDrum editor he wouldn't have a darned thing to do. Just take all the letters, cut out any dirty jokes (seldom necessary), glue them on a piece of paper and send them to Hanover for printing. What a lark!
"Another round," said Brownie.
"Do you really mean, Stet," said Hugh, "that all I have to do is get my assistant class agents lined up and that any members of the class who don't come in with the first appeal will send their contributions with an apology for the delay the minute they get a little push?"
Stet smiled over his ginger ale.
"Another round," said Brownie.
