Fledgling journalists seem to dominate our professional ranks or perhaps all of us are especially good at publicizing ourselves. But this is the first time I have read about a journalist writing a press release about herself! Writer and kick-ass ice hockey player SarahHood was profiled on the front of The Valley News sports section in early February. Apparently, right after Hood found out she would be playing for the United States in the March International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championships in Finland, Dartmouth sports information director Kathy Slattery "asked Hood, who interns in her office, to write a press release about herself."

According to the article, Hood had not heard from the national program in years. She told the paper, "I tried to make it clear through word-of-mouth that I'd do anything to be considered. I haven't been invited to any tryouts. But there wasn't a tryout for this team." National coach Ben Smith pointed out that during her senior season at Dartmouth Hood was lead scorer (22 goals, 21 assists) and the fourth place holder of all-time points. Hood was too modest to forward the press release to Class Notes but someone else spirited the clipping to me. Go Sarah!

Also gamboling abroad, in the somewhat warmer climate of Pamplona, Spain, is baseball player Dan Godfrey. Anyone who wants to see him play can reach him at his alumni account or .

Stateside, Jenna Rogers recently placed fourth with a time of 20.26 in the U.S. National Cross Country Championships. Also, John Maldonado passed along that his roommate, CharlieFiordalis, is busily grooming and training his brown labrador Langston for the U.S. "Best of Breed."

Kathy Gold wrote in with a meaty update, mentioning her summer trip of a whopping 26 days and 8,000 miles with Molly Heath, which included stops to visit Brian Amsbary, David Galazin '97, Kathryn Balink, and Ann Loomis '97. After her trip Kathy flew to Lyon to TA the fall French LSA. She is now readying herself for several months under the Arizona sun as she prepares to start her job as a Grand Canyon park ranger in May.

Molly Heath has been substitute teaching somewhere in Vermont and, just when Kathy dons her ranger hat, Molly will head for an extensive trip through Europe with a high-school friend...

An intriguing note that just came inclassmate Obianuju Anya, the first Dartmouth student to write an honors thesis in Portuguese was recently accepted to the doctoral program in Portuguese and Brazilian studies at Brown University. Her thesis dealt with race, gender, and nationality in Brazil, specifically focusing on the work of Carolina Maria de Jesus, a black woman from the "favelas" [slums] in Sao Paulo, who wrote a diary in the 19605, translated into English as A Childof the Dark.

Finally, congratulations to recently engaged couple Stu Jordan and JessicaWest! They plan to marry sometime early next year...Keep the updates coming!
