As this issue of the DartmouthAlumni Magazine arrives at our homes or offices the England-Ireland trip will be a recent and pleasant memory. Right now, it is something we are looking forward to with keen anticipation. The banner of the class newsletter rightly affirms "Good Friends are Worth the Effort!" True. New friends are worth the effort, too. We find the prospect of meeting new people and developing new friendships very exciting. And all this while exercising the "little gray cells" learning about different cultures in Europe (and America, for that matter). Thanks again to Charlie Balch, PatGiles, Dan Hummel, John Knight, TomKomarek, and Mike Howard for their hard work and generous hospitality.

Recent mail, telephone calls, and press clippings from Israel, Los Angeles, Texas, Pittsburgh, and Wisconsin set a mood: JonGershovitz writes from Israel: "...I received a master's in social work from Columbia two years after we finished at Dartmouth. I loved the fieldwork, had some excellent teachers, and got to know Manhattan very well...I have been working as the social worker for a smallish old-age home in Tel-Aviv for the last four years and am very happy with my work..." There is much more in Jon's letter which brings back memories. We last ran across each other when he was visiting at Harvard in 1965 or so and I was struggling along at trade school (medicine). Thanks for the letter, Jon. The reply is in the mail though unconscionably late.

The Los Angeles Daily Journal wrote about Stefan M. Mason. Steve is a fall-time mediator specializing in labor and employment relations law. The Journal reports that Steve "settles cases by employing tact, empathy, and hard-eyed realism." "The major purpose of mediation is to calm down the parties," says Steve. Sounds to me like litigious America could use more attorneys like Steve. A press release from Texas reports that James William Varnum, the president of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, was elected to the board of directors at the VHA health care alliance, a nationwide network of more than 1,800 leading community-owned health-care organizations and their physicians. Charles Cantor Cohen has been instrumental in getting a new football stadium for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chuck was sports editor of The Dartmouth and has been an attorney for 33 years. He is a bond attorney with Pittsburgh's firm of Cohen & Grigsby.

A physician-politician in Wisconsin, Jeffrey C. Thomas, cares a lot about his community and his profession. Jeff is an orthopedic surgeon with the Mercy Health Systems in Wisconsin, a past member of the school board, a recent recipient of his medical society's physician-citizen award, and a man active in civic affairs. I had the chance to talk with Jeff on the phone recendy and my spirits were uplifted. Jeff explained that medicine and medical science are truly wonderful but the medical insurance situation is a royal mess. ("Amen.") Jeff has the energy and interest to try to influence the system in a positive way, but so far a seat in the House of Representatives has eluded him. Keep on truckin', Jeff. Thanks for the mail, y'all.
