With years of service and experience, '63s are moving into boardrooms and other senior roles. Inspired by NROTC, Bill Adelaar endured the cold aboard USS Atka windclass icebreaker and in Operation Deep Freeze, which helped win him the Antarctica Service Medal. Aretired textile executive, Bill continues to weigh anchors for the Navy League, Naval Order and the Military Order of Foreign Wars. Recently, the foundation, which helps fund the Naval War College, alma mater of admirals Nimitz and Halsey, added Bill to its board of trustees. Tom Berardino has been recruited to the board of Network Six Inc., Warwick, Rhode Island, a NASDAQ-listed information technology company in which Toms firm, Saugatuck Capital, has invested $2.5 million. Ken Novack, key architect of the America Online-Time Warner merger, has been elected to the AOL board of directors, replacing Thomas Middelhoff, Bertelsmann's chairman and CEO, who resigned.
Launny Steffens, who has 37 years at Merrill Lynch and the last 15 as head of all brokerage, has moved on to a senior advisory role, having been replaced by E. Stanley O'Neal. Launny was an early critic of online trading and is credited with many innovations including moving Merrill beyond stock brokering into asset management. Barry Linsky, senior vice president, Interpublic Group, the advertising and marketing conglomerate, can again put all his energies into strategic planning, now that Interpublic has found someone to head up their Allied Communications Group, which Barry has also headed.
Paul Binder's Big Apple Circus is as renown for the money, resources and training it provides New York's inner-city children as it is for its annual holiday season tent performances in Damrosch Park near Lincoln Center. Which makes Paul and others wonder why New York's city administration invited Ringling Brothers to compete with theirversion of a one-ring circus at the same time this year down the street at Bryant Park. Meanwhile Paul's circus continues to draw crowds around the country with acts that include an equestrian performance by Paul's wife, Katja, and children Katherine, 14, and Max, 12, both of whom travel with the troupe and are schooled by the Wandering Schoolhouse, a service for families in the entertainment business. While we're on that subject, how's this for type casting? Actor Steve Macht appeared as the father of Dr. Mark Gabriel, played by Steve's son, Gabriel Macht, in The Others, Steven Spielberg's new mid-season replacement series for NBC.
Jerry Ashworth, president and 25-year veteran of General Metals in Boston, was honored with a 12th-place ranking in the Lawrence, Massachusetts,Eagle-Tribund's tribute to the 25 greatest local athletes of the 20th century. Jerry's achievement was winning the gold medal in the 4-by-100 relay in the 1964 Olympics in Japan, an honor that led to his meeting the legendary Jesse Owens and then-U.S. Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage at a hero's reception in Jerry's hometown of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He still holds Dartmouth records in the 50,100 and 200 meters.
