After several years of reading my column, you must think I am obsessed with the weather in Houston. So just to prove you wrong, I'm not going to write anything about how obscenely hot it has been for the past two months (heat indices of 110 degrees or more). Nor will I talk about how miserable my roses are without any rain for the past month. And I promise not to even whisper about how yucky (sophisticated mother vocabulary) it feels to walk out of the house into a sauna every morning. And you thought you knew me!

Several classmates responded to my email pleading for information. Jonathan Rubens (that is Rubens "like the painter") is a lawyer in San Francisco, working with start-ups and early-stage companies. According to Jonathan, e-commerce seems to be the rage among 'Bss in San Francisco, including: Eric Wilinski (working for a start-up employment-related web site); Lori Bamberger (starting Gear Goddess. com, a web site focused on athletic gear for women); and Scott Liebman (starting a business selling wine on the web). Greg Beasley is in Palo Alto, Calif., and the vice president of business development for Vicinity Corp., a digital-mapping company. As a new e-commerce entrepreneur myself (Quixtar.com, a virtual mall plus), I can appreciate the potential ups and downs of the technology and wish all of my www-focused classmates good luck.

Keith Vetter has a new baby girl, Tessa, who will be six months old as you read this. Keith is working at a start-up business called Softßook Press, which makes a hand-held book reading device. He lives in Oakland, Calif. Keith reports that Gregor Bailar has moved to McLean, Va., with wife Terry Hong Bailar '86 and second child Caleb. Gregor is the chief technology officer at NASDAQ (talk about a crisis-oriented job!). And congratulations to Eric Beinhocker, who is now a partner with McKinsey (Consulting?) in Washington, D.C.

Laura Swain and husband Scott have bought a house in Lexington, Mass. To make time for remodeling, they have taken a break from their masters swimming. Laura reports that she has made a couple of New England Masters All Time Top Ten lists of swimmers ("I guess everyone else must be aging and slowing down..."). I suppose that my almost 4-year-old Leah learning to swim under water pales in comparison.

For a little culture '85 style, visit the Newark (N.J.) Museum in January and see the work of Sue Reckford, who will be the museum's artist in residence for January 2000. One of Sue's career goals is to make a business out of her passion for making one-of-a-kind jackets out of handmade boiled wool, and this latest honor helps bring that dream one step closer to reality. One of her jackets will be included in an exhibit running from mid-January through February. A big "You go, girl!" from her former Alpha Chi Omega lawn-knittingclub buddies—Terri Sergesketter Heath, Kirsten Johansen, Lynn Fabrizio, and yours truly—is certainly appropriate. If you want to contact any of the folks mentioned in this column, just send me your updates and I'll pass on your information (yes, I am ruthless).

In closing, keep your eyes on the baby announcements for Jan. 1, where you just might read about yours truly (the due date for Nadel baby No. 3, and no, we didn't go for a millennium baby deliberately). Who knows—we might be famous! Take care and keep those e-mails rolling.
