A Christmas letter from BobThome in Claremont, Calif., summarizes his "relatively quiet 12th year of retirement." However, in truth Dr. Bob and Mae attended the 16th International Botanical Congress in St. Louis, he lectured at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden and they spent several weeks visiting relatives in the eastern United States. We should all be so inactive! And Bob has a hip replacement that requires him to use a cane for long walks.

He passed along a clipping noting that a 50-year resident of Claremont Beulah Maxwell, had died in December in the local hospital after a six-month illness. She was the widow of Hank Maxwell, who passed away in 1995.

Talked to Grant Hesser's Joanie to learn that they were very happy with their September move from Stuart, Fla., to nearby Palm City. They are in an elegant life-care facility with nearby golf, which they both enjoy. Grant has already been recruited for community committees, but will find time to attend the Florida mini on March 14-15.

Reached George Clabaugh by phone in Chicago, where he grew up and worked for a long time. George had a private practice in internal medicine His health is good, but like many in our age group, he required a bypass operation about 11 years ago. He's looking forward to moving into the Kendal facility in Hanover but expects to be on the waiting list for more than a year.

Had a nice chat on the phone with JackHorner, the Hoosier car dealer and hospital administrator in West Lafayette, Ind. Jack and Janice were soon to be heading to a warmer clime for a February visit to Naples, Fla. Jack is still playing golf but has to take it easy after straining his back last year.

An amazing classmate is Bob Miner, who still practices dentistry in Hancock, N.H. After 27 years in the Boston area he gave up his office there in 1972 and settled in the lessstressful environs of New Hampshire. He still enjoys his work and his loyal patients, so why quit, he says. Bob denies that GeorgeHerman, a one-time patient in Hancock, moved back to Washington D.C., because of any dental problem.
