Before I get into reunion information (65 years since Commencement!), here's an item from Don Radasch about the Athletics Sponsor Program and the role the class of '35 has had in financing campus visits by student-athletes. Don said the class was responsible for three football freshmen last fall, with Yank Price and JohnTodd as sponsors. Don was involved in enrolling a women's lacrosse player from Elliot City, Md.; Bill Russell sponsored a candidate for men's soccer from Eden Prairie, Minn.; and Cam Duncan was credited with a women's soccer player from Richmond, Va. Class members contributed $7,510 ($1,865 through class dues, plus 35 special donations) toward the 1998-99 program that cost $273,947 and introduced Dartmouth to 95 potential undergraduates.
It's always good to hear that the Sarasota "snowbird" contingent (RalphSpecht, Rey Moulton and KenWebster) continues to meet regularly, a routine that has Frank picking up Rey for a first stop at Ken's, where a "Beefeater martini is waiting" for Frank, and a "fancy vodka" for Rey. Then on to the Dartmouth club for luncheon. All three of those guys and their wives are on chairman Bill Mathers' "planning to attend" list for reunion June 9-11.
This is written in late February, hence who, and how many, will attend reunion, is "very preliminary," nonetheless Bill has a tally of 59 individuals (32 classmates, 23 wives, two widows and two guests) who say they will likely be present in June, another 33 (17 classmates, 12 wives, three widows and one guest) "hope to come" and 62 (24 classmates, 19 wives and 19 widows) are "definitely" not available. The numbers reflect reality: There were 691 of us who matriculated in the fall of 1931; degrees were earned eventually by 519. As of June 30, 1999, there were 147 graduates living, and the number is less today. So 60 classmates all in their late 80s capable of making reunion is a reasonable response. Bill is hoping to have more than 100 (counting wives, widows and others), a record for a class that's been out of college as long as 1935. See you in June.
