The National Merit Scholars and the high school All-American football recruits never saw the Motor Lodge on their visits to campus. Nevertheless, it has alumni who speak fondly of it—I have a verifiable quote. Back out here in Colorado, not surprisingly, is Landis Arnold. Landis continued ski jumping for a couple of years after graduating and met his wife, I vana, at the Sarajevo Olympics, where she was competing for the Czechoslovakian alpine ski team. They are raising a 2-year old daughter in Boulder. Landis founded a kayak distribution company called Wildwasser Sports. The highlight of the job is designing a couple of kayaks a year, including the Kodiak sea kayak, of which he is most proud. Landis keeps in touch with Sally McCoy at outdoor recreation industry events. Sally is president of Sierra Designs. He doesn't see enough of Mike Travers or Greg Gardner, despite their respective Colorado residences.
I can report with confidence that Martha Solis is doing well. I saw her at each of the seven intermissions of the 11-hour production of Tantalus here in Denver.
My condolences to Jeff "Tanker" Newman, who is raising his 4-year old child by himself following the death of his wife in 1996. He left his law practice in 1994 to start a firm that renders patent drawings for patent attorneys in Concord, New Hampshire. After 14 years in the National Guard, from whence the moniker "Tanker" (i.e., tank commander) comes, he resigned his commission. He has written several unpublished novels and is running for state representative with bipartisan support.
Nancy Bowler sent me an e-mail and said feel free to embellish it—it's nice to finally have permission. Nancy currently works for a subsidiary of Edison Mission Energy. Three reincarnations earlier of that same employer, she worked for a joint venture between Citizens Power and Lehman Brothers, which was formed to trade electricity in the newly deregulating energy markets. Nancy is married to Brian Goeselt, who is the brand manager for Ken's Foods. They have two children, ages 3 and 1.
Although Steve D'Antonio claims to be an overworked father of five, Jim "Goldy" Golden says otherwise. Despite his stated commitments, "D'An" still maintains a solid singledigit golf handicap. Steve is overseeing e-commerce initiatives for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. Like you, I'm not quite sure what that means. Goldy, on the other hand, is recently married and lives in Manhattan. Goldy is still moving markets on the government bond trading desk at Lehman Brothers.
In non-Molo news, I got a nice note from Martha Hill Gaskill, who wrote me of the birth of her daughter in May. Stacy Gudrun Gaskill joins her 4-year-old brother Wesley. Martha lives in Golden, Colorado. She recounted hiking with the aforementioned Wesley, under his own power, and Stacy, in kid carrier, up to a 13,800-foot peak and getting caught in bad weather. As a fellow Colorado resident, I am impressed with myself when I drive with the kids to 12,000 feet.
Congratulations to John "U-T-Z-Schneider a.k.a. Utzie" Utzschneider on his wedding to Alice Eng on October 8 on the Wellesley campus. It was the only time since the colleges founding that 16 Dartmouth males had ever actually been extended an invitation onto the grounds. They were: Dave Noonan, Rob Utzschneider '79, Tom Gunning, Andy Gaillard, Seth Brewster, John Froemming, Ben Wagner, Steve Schuh, Jack Blunt, Steve Lichtenauer, Bob McNeil, Jim Morrison, Jack Blunt, Paul Johnson, Scott Simmons and yours truly.
Until next time.
