Meanwhile, as we approach our 25 th reunion (anyone who wants to volunteer should contact our class president CurtOberg),I continue to be impressed by the diversity of roads taken by our classmates.

I spoke recently with Patty Thompson Hickey, who lives in Lake Forest, Illinois, where she serves on the executive board for the Lake Forest school district. Patty heads up the Art Time Machine program for the district, a multidisciplinary approach to teaching elementary and middle-school students about history and art. Kindergarteners learn about ancient Egypt, then proceed to study Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Victorian England. In addition to administering the program, Patty also teaches in it. Patty has three children: Katie (15), Kristin (13) and Jeff (10).

Another classmate involved in education is Jeffrey Weeks, mathematician and Mac Arthur Fellow, who delivered the 2001 Alfred Romer Lecture at St. Lawrence University. His topic was "The Shape of Space," exploring his theory that space may not be infinite—it may be finite yet have no boundary. Jeffrey used computer games and interactive 3-D graphics to show his audience several possible "shapes" and concluded with an explanation of the "Big Bang" and how residual radiation may reveal the true shape of the universe. His book The Shape of Space is an introduction to topological analysis that has received high honors from the International Congress of Mathematicians. His award-winning video of the same title introduces these ideas to students in grades six through 10.

Congratulations to Kevin Hoffman for leading our class in an impressive Alumni Fund performance. Kevin received the John H. Davis 1925 Trophy for greatest non-reunion dollar total. The class received two awards—for outstanding nonreunion achievement and for greatest dollar improvement. Way to go, everyone!

Dartmouth is part of a regional recycling network that is the brain child of Mark Lennon. The first and only of its kind, IR Network enables Dartmouth, Harvard, Northeastern, Brandeis, Smith and others to pool their resources so they can gain access to markets and get better prices. Their recycling programs are more cost effective, which enables them to expand. IR Network ( www.ir-network.com ) is also the first to use the Internet to handle transactions, which lowers the colleges' costs and increases their convenience.
