Greetings from the nations capital. As I write this, the Supreme Court has just stopped the manual recounts in Florida and we all await some semblance of finality in one of those unbelievably rare moments when its wonderful to be an eyewitness to history. Though I'm certain the framers of the Constitution did not contemplate "dimples," "chads" and football analogies when they wrote the U.S. Constitution, these past 31 days are living proof that our democracy lives on.
Now to the mail bag. Fearful that I would make good on my promise to make things up about him, Art Schwarzwaelder responded with a 10-year update and a reminder that his memory of our College days remains intact, should I stray too far from the truth. Art lives in Pittsburgh, is married, has three children (two boys and a girl) and continues to practice law.
His specialty is civil litigation in the areas of medical malpractice and personal injury litigation and he is with John A. Caputo and Assoc. in Pittsburgh. I also received word that our own Fred Cann recently called in from the summit of South Sister Mountain in Oregon (elevation 10,400 feet) along with Kurt Wavering '59, Mike Cranach '89 and Andrew Weber '93. Fred, send me a picture!
On the business side of the world, Ron Akie was recently named executive vice president of CEO Express Cos., a provider of online desktops for business professionals. Ron lives in Boston.
In the world of politics, Howie Hawkins and his run as the Green Party candidate for State Assembly was profiled in the Syracuse, New York, Post-Standard.
Though he did not win, his strategy was clear: "You can set the agenda without winning the office."
I returned for a quick trip to Hanover last month and spent time with Stuart Lord, the new dean of the Tucker Foundation, and Holly Sateia, the dean of student life, and can report first-hand that life continues to flourish at Dartmouth.
Holly has been at Dartmouth for more than 20 years and in addition to her primary responsibilities she has also served as the advisor to Fire & Skoal during this period. For those of us in the first class of Fire & Skoal, I can report that in its 26th year, it continues to be a vibrant and integral part of the College.
By the time you receive this, the election will be over and a new president will be in office. The Dow and the NASDAQ, will be somewhere and there may still be a dot-com left in business. Winter Carnival will just be beginning and the average temperature on the Green will be in the single digits. Life goes on and hope springs eternal.
Keep the mail coming.
